    Lads,

i have a slight problem with an XP build, USB devices seem to be disabled.

They dont appear in my computer or Disk Management.

I have tried enabling removeable storage services etc...

but still no joy, any ideas on where it could be disabled from.

    Cheers

Go to your BIOS settings and set them to "Enabled", should do the trick

    Thats strange,

Are the USB ports visible in the device manager?

Check the disk management console there aren't any drive letter conflicts just on the off chance that might be the cause.

Sorry for taking so long to get back lads,

I found out what it was, there is a missing .SYS file (USBSTOR.SYS) it should be in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers, but its not, also missing the associated registry entry below.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR

If the above file is missing the computer will not discover the USB removeable drives, but will still power usb attached keyboards and mice!

On a related note, .sys fiels can only be copied into directorys they cannot be installed.

If i was to import a reg key with the appropriate info and place the .SYS file in the right location, will my USB key get picked up?

It's a possibility it will work if thats the only item that was deleted. There are a bunch of other USB entries like usbhub, usbohci etc. in the same area.

That is very odd that XP would be missing those files did the machine have a spyware problem as some point as that is the only thing outside of RAM corruption I could think of that would go around doing that.

Give it a go & see what happens.

Well its working again, i managed to clean up his whole computer as well.

I was fixing a machine for a friend, i did pull some spyware off it (so it could easily have been that or a a virus maybe), and installed all the latest updates so it should be ok.

Thanks for all the help guys

    Cheers
