Mohawk style hair for guy

When i straighten my hair it goes all strawy (no matter what I use) and there is a good bit of length in my hair (It goes curly so grows out rather than down.) The gels and waxes I use after straightening NEVER hold in mo hawk style and the wax makes my hair more strawier!!! Anyone got any suggestions please?
