Toyota Corolla problem

Wife's friend has a 99 Corolla saloon and, from what I can make out, the key has become stuck in the ignition barrel. It seems that she's been quoted something in the region of €400 to have it replaced by a main dealer - they've told her it needs something more than just the barrel replaced but she's not sure what.

Question 1 is whether the parts cost for a new ignition lock & key as well as the fitting cost is reasonable at that price.

Secondly, would there be much to fitting it - could it be a DIY job?

Presuming there's not a lot of option on sourcing the part - the immobiliser bit being involved. Any opinions?

it is reasonable, firstly, the car will have to get a barrel braket (Its the thing that locks the steering wheel when you turn it), the key and barrel will have to corrisponde to each other and you can only get this from a local respectable dealer (toyota) and also the chassis no.

well if you do this yourself you have to be handy with a hammer and chisel as it's the only way of getting it off, as it is held in with shear nuts (where you tighten the bold head will break off)

€400 is a good price, my mother recently got her key jammed in her car door cost her €250 from seat to get it replaced.

Tell your friend to bite the bullet.

    Hi Dilbert,

If the key is stuck in the ignition but the ignition still turns to the first position then it is easy to remove the ign barrell complete with the key. If it does not turn it is still possible but would require a hole to be drilled. If you can get the barrell out a locksmith could sort it.

If you need any info on the immob give me a shout but it does not sound like you have any issues there.

Thanks folks. Key still turns, car still drives, but key won't come out of the ignition - she has to leave it parked with the key in it. Sooner or later she's going to come back to find it there gone.

bring it to a locksmith (and bring logbook in case they ask for proof of ownership).
