Largest classical music competition beckons budding musicians

Sixth Year students from all over Dublin invited

to submit entries for music competition

February 12th 2007: One of the largest classical music competitions open to secondary schools in Dublin is today inviting entries for its 2007 competition. Now in its seventh year the Father Frank Maher Music Scholarship is open to 6th year students of Strings, Woodwind, Brass and Piano and has the largest bursary of any classical music competition in Ireland

The Father Frank Maher Music Scholarship is sponsored annually by "Top Security" in memory of Father Frank Maher, Teacher at Castleknock College from 1959-1998 and has a total bursary of €6,000. The Scholarship’s aim is to promote musical life, assist cultural exchange and promote young and talented musicians.

In order to enter, students must complete the application form by Friday, 23rd February and accompany this with a sample classical recording on CD or tape. The form is available to download on www.topsecurity.ie where the rules of the competition can also be viewed. All entries must come through the applicant’s school.

From the applications received an independent Board of Adjudicators will select 8 students to attend and perform in front of an invited audience in Castleknock College on Thursday 22nd March. Each competitor will perform two contrasting pieces for up to ten minutes on the competition night.

For the past seven years the annual competition has taken place in Castleknock College in memory of Fr. Frank Maher, a former music teacher at Castleknock College from 1959- 1998. A bursary of €2,000 will be awarded to the winner to assist the development of their talent and each of the other "finalists" will receive an award of €150.

For five years the Scholarship was open only to Castleknock College but in the last two years the scholarship has invited applications from a wider community of schools in the Dublin and County Dublin areas. In 2008, Top Security plan to launch the Father Frank Maher Music Scholarship as a National Scholarship.
