New pilot helmets?

Has anyone else noticed that the pilots helmets have undergone a re-design. They've kept the shape, but made it more sleek and streamlined, and added a lot of padding to the inner lining of it.

Have they explained this redesign in the story? I don't think they did, but maybe I missed it somehow. If only some of the helmets were this new design, I could understand that the pegasus pilots might have newer looking helmets. But everyone has them, which is a) a bit weird and b) fairly bad for continuity.

Speaking of helmets, is there any consistency to Raptor pilots being helmeted? In some episodes they are, and in some they are not. I understand that in some episodes the raptor is filled with marines, and it would look a little heartless for the pilots to be protected against decompression, while the marines were not, but there doesn't seem to be much logic to it.

    O_o
Why would they need to go out of their way to explain something like a costume design change?

The Cylon Versace, one of the Fives, designed some snazzy looking helmets for the New Caprica Police Force, only to have the designs smuggled out and hidden under a yellow dog dish.

    Its a hard life.

yeah, did you have to have the dog dish explained to you? Everyone was on a ship at the time: you should be so lucky there was a dog at all! Just accept the fact man....

..next you'll be asking how they got more explosive-rounds after the start of Season 2.........pfft.

Theres no need to be rude, it was only a question. I was just curious, but if one noticed/cared that's fine too.

DOn't they make their own rounds, remember the ep where someone sabotaged the viper rounds when they were manufacturing them, maybe they just hadn't gotten round to making the explosive ones yet.

People aren't rude here, just sarcastic ;)

The point had been made a couple of times about consistency, we've come to not expect it. It would be nice, but heh!

I assumed the reason they only wear sometimes is if they are in a situation that may result in decompression

Anyway; the old pilot helmets sucked so hoorah that they got rid of them. 2 main points being you could always see the huge gap area at the neck for the actors to breathe through; and then the locks to keep them in place werent that great: Starbucks helmet flies out of place in the miniseries, just a minute before the galactica gets hit

Yes, the new helmets are a better design. Anyway, thanks all.

True. Imagine, they didn't change the spandex for about 20 years before TNG started (lots of flashbacks had personell in it), then they have three major redesigns in 12 years. The starfleet tailoring division must occupy an entire planet. But that's a subject for a whole other thread.

Here's another thing I noticed. In season one, the gun used by marines was the P90 (same as SG1), then they abruptly switched to a different gun at the start of seson 2. Again, no explanation was ever given. Curious
