802.11 - what do a/g , b/g stand for?

When the spec for laptopo gives the wireless capabilities, what does the a and b stand for in 802.11 a/g, 802.11 b/g? And how significant is it? The laptop I'm looking to but is b/g

a, b, g, i are just the standards for them. the earliest version was plain 802.11 but as it evolved and bits where added to it they just gave them different names.
For example 802.11 operates at 2.4Ghz and 802.11a operates at 5Ghz. And has some other differences as well.

99% of laptops nowadays are b/g, so it's safe to go with that.
