Alot of it depends on the specs of your machine, what kind of processor it has, what size of display, what brightness your running it at etc. So there is no yes or no answer. A desktopmachine with a 17 inch display running double harddrives will be harder on juice then an ultraportable machine.

I know that alot of the intel powered units have reasonably good powermanagement software allowing the creation of profiles which allow you to throttle back the processer, dim displays etc.

I had a travelmate 3202xci running a 1.6 single core processer, 512 ram and a 60 gig hard drive which i latter upgraded to 80. Had a 15.4 inch screen and i was getting around ummm.... 3 1/4 hours out of it when typing notes away from the plug....
