Classic truck?

Don't know if this has been asked and answered before, but does anyone know what the story would be if one were to get a classic truck?

Does the classic tax also apply to trucks or only to a certain weight/cc limit?
Would an insurance company even entertain you if you wanted to insure a 30 year old truck?

This is only a barely thought out idea at the moment, but I could sort of picture myself driving an old Unimog (or something like it) around for fun every now and then.

As maintenance would cost a bundle, this would only be feasible if tax and insurance were cheap.

    Thanks for any info.

    I have a similar question!
If the truck or van ..example Dodge Ram..is imported into ireland is it still 50 euro even if it isnt 30 yrs old..Thought i read or heard something to that effect! If its for commercial use there is no import duty???

There is no import duty. I presume you mean Vehicle Registration Tax. ;)

AFAIK a Dodge Ram would have VRT applied at 13.3% of the OMSP.

Large trucks have a flat rate VRT of €50.

    This

is what I would REALLY like to have :D

But I guess it would be a tad unwieldy just for a hobby

depends on the dodge ram in question, if it's a regular cab pickup then its fifty euro VRT

if its an extended cab or crew cab then it might just get away with it, there is a rule on what defines a crewcab versus a pickup, some percentage of bed length versus wheelbase and possibly some of the extended bed big pickups might actually pass that rule.

however a lot of the bigger us pickups, ie the 3/4 and one ton models have a GVW of more than 3500kgs which puts them into the small truck domain where the rules are probably all different :)
