In Phibsborough gym in Dublin 7 there are 'Black Dragon' kickboxing/street defence classes. Anyone know if these are any good? I was thinking about joining them this week. Alternatively I'd like to join any martial arts class, especially a mixed martial arts 'fighting system' type class in or around where I live. Anyone know anywhere nearby?

    Thanks.

Hey, don't know anything about Black Dragon, so I can't comment there. My club is down the road a bit in Glasnevin and we train in BJJ, Kickboxing and MMA. Feel free to pop down for a look.

Sounds good. Where and when and how much? I'm a student so do I get student rate?

Saw the website. Now I know the when and where bit I just need to know how much.

Well the first night you come down to us is a freebie- its on us, and we do a montly rate depending on how much you want to train. Theres no student rate but our rates were recently described by the Obmudsman as "equivalent to a student rate"*. I don't like posting costs on the web so if you're mad to know before you come down you can pm me and I'll give you the details.

    Cheers,
    Barry

They used to be on after the Aikido class in Phibsboro when I trained there years ago... from what I remember it seemed to be training for fitness and it was mainly women and kids taking part. I'd go to Ropers, it's only down the road!

Was this the Aikido that used to be in the shopping centre there? I used to pass that all the time and see the sign. I always wondered if it was still on because the sign looked as though it had been there years!

    Hey Johnny,
Bridgestone is in your area, just off stoneybatter, and they are great. Muay thai place, no mma, but still fantastic gym. But if it's mma your after, check out ropers place. Great training and totally fun, fun guys there too, no pressure or nutcases going mad at you.

Anyway, whatever you decide, I hope you enjoy it and it all works out for you.

Yup, thats where I started....it's been there for almost 12 years now, I was there on day one... don't train there anymore but its the same association as us in Swords (DAA).

    lol roper,
wait till he's in the door man. Then you can get out your big encoragement stick and 'inspire' you guys to greater feats. By the way, did you ever get the blood off the walls from the time that newb couldn't do 500 sit ups?

    And thanks johnny

Firstly Dave there is no "encouragement stick" and to say there is one is slanderous- its really more of a rod.

Yes, but please don't mention tht it was my blood...:D

Why so secretive? Don't make me start a betting pool!

    Too late:

Who is teaching BJJ in Phibsboro:
    Clive 5-1
    Roddy 20-1
    John Kavanagh- 400-1

Before you jump on this PaddyC I wouldn't give you odds on the sun coming up!

If I have an hour of a Sunday evening I might pop down but I'd really have to know who's coaching!

I thought a read somewhere that a fella called Johnny something was instructing there in a semi-formal basis, definitely wasn't a name I recognized.

On further thought I think I only read a name on this thread and was later deleted so my information is at best of little value.

Could go to Martial Arts Inc. They're slaed off for being to commercial but I've always found them good and you can train there 7 days a week.

Finally, I'm favourite for something! It's not me though, I only teach the ancient and deadly art of Taekwondo. Here I am awarding my most recent black belt:
