Help me: Civil Eng Work placement

I got a quick talk on this yesterday and I know I could ask some people in the department but I reckon some people here might be able to give a good insight. Bascially, my summer has been stolen and I have to do a work placement from June to September as part of my degree.

I'm not really sure what company to go for. Most of the big ones (consulting and contracting) are available to us.

I think I would probably learn more from working on site but the hours would be longer and more unpredictable and since I'm going to be paid on a flat weekly rate, I could get gouged. What kind of stuff will I be doing on site? Am I doomed to a summer of surveying or will I get to do anything interesting?

Consultants office could also be a good learning experience but could also be very boring. Here, I'm concerned I will be doomed to a summer of AutoCAD. What can I expect to be doing?

I don't even know if I want to do this as a career so a mix of the two would probably best but I don't know if this is possible.

Can anyone give me any info/advice?

    Thanks

if youre in or around dublin, dublin city council should give you a nice mix of site and office (they did for me anyway). also its laidback, a bit of craic and there are hot chicks in there
