Just rang to cancel my ntl digital and the guy on the other end told me that it was not a wise thing to do as they will be turning off their analouge service within the next year and I will have to pay to be re connected to the digital service? Does that mean no more basic 19 channels then on our tv tuners?

This will be a shame as its great for the multi room viewing.

Get Sky, the 20 euro a month package includes the Irish/"UK 4" channels.

I honestly dont think its far away this time. The analogue channels need to be removed to make way for more digital channels.
I know on MMDS anyway that removing an analogue channel can allow for something like 8-11 digital channels. Not entirely sure the exact amount.

Analogue doesnt have to make way for digital. Digital uses a single carrier frequency to carry a lot of channels accross the network so unless there talkin about added a few thousand channels to the digital then analogue doesn't have to go anywhere,

I'd say it's just bull****, you could always go with chorus anyway.

Analogue doesnt have to make way for digital yeah but its still taking up space being their that could be use for DTV. Get rid of the 18 Analogue channels thats 180+ dtv channels. Although if they used a better compression that mpeg2 they could fit more in on the current setup.

You just highlighted the biggest issue with pay digital TV - you need a box for every room, unless it's like Sky+ & so far there is no one else offering that type of service.

At least with DTT you can nip out & buy as many low cost (hopefully) tuners as you need, with UPC you have to rent , = increased profit$ for UPC.

Analogue might be poor quality, but it was easy to have multi-room viewing at no extra costs.

did you have much hassle cancelling the contract? i.e. did they try hit you with a cancelation fee? goin to cancel my ntl tv/broadband as im moving house.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,326 ✭✭✭lensman

If/when NTHell do drop the analogue service wont that save us all €19.99 per month ;) knowing NTHell they will chance their arm at uping the digital family pack to €30 from €10 per month.....:(

you can cancle at any time, if you contract is less than 1yr old they might look for a fee alright,....if it's over a year than tell them to position their contract in the exact same place they speak from,...

the analouge service in cork will be gone by the end of june according to a sales guy i know that works for chorus , so it would nt be suprising if the dublin service is going also since there the one company

Don't expect a price reduction when analogue goes away, it's still there because it has to be, until everyone is watching digital.

And yes, the price will be ~€30, because the €10 price never really reflected the true cost.

that would suit me grand, I'll keep the BB & get rid of the TV package, than switch back to sky for TV & wait a year until sky launch their BB deal over here.

yeah, that suits me as well. all i have ntl really is for the BB. I have the analogue channels allright but very rarely watch them as i have 3rd party satellite recievers along with a uk sky box.

Don't you need an analogue decoder for Chorus in Cork? I would suspect they plan to replace all of these with digital ones. This is very different to switching off analogue altogether.

yep you do they re in the process of changing everyone to digital and then it ll be switched off

NTHell will need to give all customers 2nd stb free so as to maintain the multichannel option, that's if the want to up the cost of the digital service
to compensate for the loss of revenue if they drop the analogue service.

When we cancelled our Digital last month, they tried to hit us with all sorts of special offers. At one stage they were offering us free with all the channels for 2 months! The catch was that we had to agree to another contract first :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,326 ✭✭✭lensman

lots of people seem to be canceling their HTHell digital,....I wonder why ;)

AIUI, you have take NTL TV to keep BB.
You don't have to watch it, but you do have to pay for it:rolleyes:

Crap, but what can you do, they are primarily a cable TV company who sell BB, but TV is the core business.

Similar happened to us when I cancelled all our NTL services, A+D+BB. I gave them the 1 months notice on 18/11 and they only cut us off BB & DTV on Friday week last. Then on Wednesday they called me offering me two months free service (on two products only though) if we stayed with them & coz I miss the BB so much I said OK. Guy came today Saturday and reinstalled the BB with a new cable modem. I don't understand why they couldn't just have re-enabled the old one over the phone when I agreed to rejoin. Also I see it is a new 12 month contract.

I just canceled mine and this board isn't big enough to say how much they di*ked me around...they have got to be the worst service provider in the country!

This will help, but still won't make up for the loss of true multichannel.
What do you do if you have 3 or more TV's?

You'll then need to buy video senders that have remote control capability & share one digibox between 2 TV's. This might work out fine, but those boxes are not cheap.

Did they try to tell you that they
    1) Never got your email cancelling even though they sent back an automatic email reply confirming receipt and that it would be actioned.
    or
    2) Did they then tell you that they changed over systems so that your cancellation request was lost and so must be resubmitted?
    or
    3)
Did they then say that they couldn't cancel because they didn't have your home address- even thought they send a bill there every two months!
    or
4)Did they make an offer of 2 months free service to stay on?

    At no. 4 I accepted.

    I've got a choice to make -

    Currently have:
Digital TV - NTL for last 3 yrs
BB - NTL 6MB package since last month

    Would prefer to have:
    Digital TV - Sky+ multi-room
    BB - NTL 6MB package

If I were to request NTL to disconnect my Digital, does that mean my NTL BB would also go too (sorry for stating the obvious but I want to be extra clear on this)?

If the answer to the above question is yes, and I lose both NTL Digital and BB, will there be any penalties to pay seeing as though I only got the BB in last month?

    Thanks all.

you can drop your nthell digital tv package & keep the BB,...but remember you will be paying for the nthell analogue TV service (€19.99) pm as well as €39.99 pm for the 6mb BB package, the bsaatdrs wont sell you BB alone, the insist you pay for the old non digital tv service as well.   if you decide to cancel any package before the 1yr contract is up they can charge you a fee

    Mr Black

Yeah, but they're still going to bill you for the two months "free service".

After an almighty cock-up last november, I finally managed to get them to disconnect my BB account. They ignored all my attempts to get in contact with them for a month and a half. Only after numerous registered letters and the threat of the small claims court did someone get in touch. A very nice girl rang me and apologised for everything and said she'd cancel the BB immediately and give me two months tv service free. Grand.

Of course since then, I've been billed for this twice and had a threatening letter from them saying they'll steal my kids in the night if I don't pay this amount in full immediately. My service will be cancelled too, and I'll have to crawl across hot coals with big bags of cash to get them to reconnect it. If they can be bothered, like.

I also had a missed call from a masked man in their credit department, who left no name, and asked me to call back on the 1800321321 no. Of course, there's no "credit" department at that number. "Accounts" didn't know what I was talking about, and "Customer Service (ha)" told me to take it up with the accounts department. Of course neither of them were able to transfer me to the other department, so I was put back to the main switch three times.

Another registered letter later (more small claims court threats) and I got another letter from them saying "It appears you haven't received a bill from us since November" blah blah blah. It also says that I signed up with them for a "Special Offer", and my next bill will be for all past fees due PLUS the next two months in advance. They're also changing my billing frequency from bi-monthly to monthly, for some reason.

So don't expect them to give you two months free. The department who offered you this have no communication with the accounts department, nor seem to hold any customer records or file history whatsoever. They may as well have offered you a Ninety-Nine and a free donkey.

I would love nothing more than to swap over to Sky (who are probably just as bad) and drop these sorry pri*ks like a hot turd, but we're renting, so a dish isn't an option.

    Best of luck anyway.
