Heading to new zealand this summer and just looking for advice on living/working in Auckland.

Anyone know what the better areas to live in are ?
Is Auckland a better choice over say wellington, more people more jobs ??

Whats the going rate for a 1 or 2 bedroom furnished place ?

    All info appreciated !
    Thanks

I'm not sure about Auckland but The North Shore is the most sought after. Also places like Ponsby and Parnell are too.
They're very much into classifying suburbs here.

If you're moving to Auckland I'd suggest living near your workplace to ease the commute in the morning

Personally I prefer Wellington, It's got a similar vibe to Galway and a bit of Cork.
Auckland is the 'Big Smoke' and Wellington has more character.
The weather in Wellington is a wee bit windy though :)
Kiwis don't really like Aucklanders but that's to be expected. The traffic is pretty bad but nothing compared to Dublin that's for sure.

Jobs in both cities should be pretty easy to come by.
What kind of work you looking for? If you're looking for Programming then my company are hiring. I'm based in Hamilton, about 1h30 South of Auckland. A city smaller than Limerick. Not as buzzing as Auckland / Wellington but I like it ;)

How long are you coming to NZ for?
Whats the going rate for a 1 or 2 bedroom furnished place ?

You're going to be hard pushed to get a fully furnished place. Most rentals are unfurnished here. Not even a Fridge/Washing machine sometimes.
Have a look on the trademe website below for a selection of rentals to get an idea.

Thanks for the reply flyz ... some very handy info !

I will be trying for a networks / systems admin role , but will work at anything to be honest. Trademe site seems good , found quite a few furnished options, looking to spend $350 a week or so, sharing with the missus.

Payrates seem a little lower than Oz, i worked in Oz for a year and was on an average wage of $25 (AUS) an hour.

    Thanks !

I'm working here in NZ. Pay is less than Oz and definitly Ireland. But rent is cheaper. I'm based in Auckland, living in a 2 bed city centre apartment, $150 each a week.

Yeah for salary here, you should expect about 75% of what you get in Ireland.

It's not a country to live in for saving but it is a country to live in for an excellent lifestyle! :)

For IT jobs you shouldn't have any problems getting work in Auckland.

Glad to be of help. Just holler if you have anymore questions ;)
