It will be interesting to see how well enforced the HGV ban is, both at the start and four months down the line. Presumably DCC will have to ask the gardai to find resources to enforce it and not rely on random checks?

So reading it correctly the 4 axle trucks can come, go and pass through with no problems?

For the moment, they will be banned, perhaps in about 2 years, leaving only 2 & 3- axle vehicles and unicycles.

Maybe it's just that I'm paying more attention to HGVs since the tunnel opening, but I've noticed a hell of a lot of 4-axle artics recently. Are hauliers adjusting their fleets to avoid the ban or were there always so many 4-axles?

What happens to those trucks that have an axle that can be raised off the ground when it is carrying no load? You sometimes see this on the tractor unit or the trailer. Apparently, it's more fuel efficient. Will it be 5 axles on the vehicle or 5 axles that touch the ground?

there are far more 3-axles trailers now then there was a few years ago. AFAIK It's the councils intention to start with 5 and move down to banning smaller HGV's.

I imagine more companies putting 4 axles to the max weight??

An interesting comment from a trucker friend at my forum (from the UK) is that 5 axles spread the weight better and are safer.

I cant imagine any EU city ever being truck free?
Will more operators go under OR change their stock for 4 axles, lets face it, its just the trailer. (unless 3 axle rig)

Brian, below is the relevant extract from the relevant regs:

STATUTORY INSTRUMENTS No. 638 of 2006

“total number of axles” in relation to a mechanically propelled vehicle, means that all the wheels of the vehicle, the centres of which lie in a vertical plane extending across the full width of the vehicle at right angles to its longitudinal axis is to be regarded as forming a single axle and in determining the total number of axles, any axle attached to a vehicle or attached to any trailer drawn by the vehicle which is capable of transmitting any part of the weight of the vehicle or trailer to the surface of a road is included in the total.
