    hey,
    was just wondering did anyone have an opinion on what wireless router i should get? I have NTL broadband, was thinkin' of getting the Linksys WRT54G cuz a mate told me their pretty good. Is there much difference between the normal one & the speedbooster one?

    Also noticed the NETGEAR WGR614 & D-Link AirPlus G DI-524, anyone know anything bout these? Need to pick up a wireless notebook adapter also, was thinkin of the Linksys one? I need to connect all this to a pc & 2 laptops.

    Finally;
    I connect my NTL cable modem through USB, can never get the ethernet cable working, always says that the network has limited or no connectivity whenever i do?! Am i gona have major problems!?? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    thanks

    Hi Matt,

    Which NTL Broadband package did you choose? If you went for the Max package (€39.99 per month), you should have received a free wireless router.

    I signed up 3 weeks ago and I'm still chasing my router - They have confirmed I should get it but are too incompetent to actually do anything.

    thanks MattE, my modem has a usb port and no ethernet connection. I thought that i should have an ethernet port, i read somewhere that NTL wont change it for me so i am wondering if you have the same modem as i do. its a motorola SB5101e and how this is connected to the modem

    i had the exact same problem mate, my main computer in the house is ancient n has no ethernet port. u can pick up a pci or nci card (same thing) in any computer store 4 bout 8euros. dont get the 'branded' ones cuz they cost bout 25! just get a basic, 'non-branded' one. open up the computer, slap it in n away u go! its v easy 2 do, any problems lemme know

    Have used the WRT54G router for maybe 18 months with my NL I never had any major problem with it at all. The version I got was v4 which allowed to flash the firmware with 3rd party firmware version so I used hyperWRT which did not give me a major improvement but it was noticelby improvement on wired and wireless performance as I benchmarked this before and after.

    I have also heard a new 3 com router purchased by a person giving really good improvements over their old ruter but I odnt really have details on this.

    also off topic but if you want to look into tweaking your OS for cable broadband take a look at http://www.cablenut.com/

    Yep, as long as the Netopia has ethernet output and not USB only.

    Put it in bridge mode (info in the FAQ stickied on front page of this forum), connect it to the WRT54G and configure the WRT54G with the correct login/settings for your internet provider.

    So i wouldn't be getting rid of the old modem no? I won't do as a modem and wireless router no?

    No you need to keep your modem as the linksys is just a router.
