    Hi,
I have just bought a 320GB WD MyBook.. I have already put about 40 Gigs of stuff onto it so far but now I want to partition off about 10-15 GB so I can install another OS (Ubuntu) onto it and learn linux while still having windows... Can you make partitions ondrive without formatting the whole drive?Whats the best software for it?

Also, just a wuick question. I have an old computer at home that I would like to use to boot the OS from the MyBook. But it hasn't got the boot from USB function.. Can I update the BIOS so it has that function??

    Thanks,
    Techguy

Why not just partition the main hard drive instead of the USB drive? You can easily partition a drive and allow the PC to Dual boot OS's. Ubuntu makes it quite simple in fact. If you go down the USB road, apart from needing to boot of a USB drive (and all the added joys), you have the added hassle of being limited in speed by USB2. Usually, installing linux on a USB disk is alot more difficult than on a normal disk so I wouldnt recommend it as a first attempt.

For partitioning, I like GParted. You need to burn an image of it. It's a Live Linux CD so you can boot up into it, and Partition Disks, without having them mounted.

I would have ubuntu already installed only i'm pushed for space (regrets ordering only a 40GB hd with laptop)
    * So can I partition the ext hard drive with GParted without deleting whats on it??

If you just want to flute around with Linux, try VMware. There are ready-made ubuntu images available for download. That way you don't have to go partitioning an external drive.

I have failed at trying to get Ubuntu to boot from the external USB hd so I think I will go down the VMware route..
Khannie, Do you have any links on this?? Why would you want a ready-made image for this? I have a ubuntu disc downloaded and also VMware workstation 6..
    What do I do now?

    Thanks for the help lads..
