So we've all seen those Windows Vista adverts, well remember when Windows adverts were cool...just like this Windows 386 advert from the early 90's
    http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/software/the-most-ridiculous-windows-video-ever-234831.php

I honestly don't know what kind of drugs these people must have been on, but they must have been great to make this advert seem so good to them :)

Remember everyone, Windows 386 is the soul of new machines!
After watching this video you will forever want this time back as its just that bad....its up their with "don't copy that floppy"

The sad thing is, someone probably got paid for writing that travesty.
They could have just nipped down to the local nut-house and asked for suggestions.

The full 12 minute version can be found on this Microsoft blog along with some background info, it was such a bad advertisement. It's amazing that Microsoft still hasn't learned in all the intervening years how to market it products effectively.

Also, who can forget the ad campaign for Windows 95 where Microsoft allegedly paid The Rolling Stones some obscene amount of money for the rights to use the song 'Start Me Up' as the theme tune for the ad campaign?

I can just imagine how much thought the ad execs put into that idea! "Hmmm, let's see. New operating system, new features including a 'START' button you use to launch programs...... oooh, I know, 'Start Me Up' God, we're geniuses!" :D

*edit* For those of you who don't (or were too young at the time to) remember ;):D: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VPFKnBYOSI

    Also, interesting article here.....

    http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/016913.html

    and part 2 here.....

    http://weblogs.jupiterresearch.com/analysts/gartenberg/archives/016923.html

explaining how the whole thing came about.

Hmmm, seems maybe the "obscene amount of money" the Stones got for allowing the use of the song may not have actually been as obscene as initially reported.

Oh, by the way, for a nice little laugh (if you haven't heard it already) do a seach for an MP3 that's been doing the rounds for years now called 'Windows 95 Sucks', I think it's called. It's a Weird Al-style parody that sums up pretty well the problems a lot of people experienced when Win95 was launched such as not having enough memory or machines powerful enough to run it and all the money they had to fork out in upgrades or new computers to get the damn thing running properly! :D

Remember Steve Balmer trying to sell Windows 1.0

Yeah, saw that vid a few years ago. What a gobshíte that Steve "Developers, Developers, Developers" Ballmer is, eh? Makes you wonder if it's all a massive act on his part or if he really is some sort of coked-up-to-the-eyeballs loony! I reckon the latter, to be honest. I mean, seriously, he must have hoovered a shítload of Colombia's finest up his nose before he came out on stage doing his "Monkeyboy Dance"! Oh, if you've never seen this by the way, and there can't be many who haven't at this stage, do a search for it. It really has to be seen to be believed! ;):D

Considering Ballmer's antics over the years, and the video the OP posted, it really makes you wonder how much illegal substances are being consumed by people who work for Microsoft! :D

I saw the Vista TV ad on telly within the last two weeks. It was on an Irish channel, all I was thinking was, if they have to advertise it on TV it mustn't be selling that well. The actual ad was completely missable and forgetable, full of smiley, happy people.

Ballmers behaviour is quite understandable considering the crisis facing Microsoft, and the threats to their two core businesses; Windows and Office. Does this seem like a panicked, insecure, anxious, angry man? Yes.

Microsoft have always advertised Windows on television. Not necessarily in Ireland, but each release has had a television ad campaign with it.

And later in the song it goes
You, you, you make a grown man cry

The - start-up sound for the Windows 95 operating system (which Eno created on his Apple Macintosh).
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Eno
The thing from the agency said, "We want a piece of music that is inspiring, universal, blah-blah, da-da-da, optimistic, futuristic, sentimental, emotional," this whole list of adjectives, and then at the bottom it said "and it must be 3¼ seconds long."
