hi. i'm sean, i'm 13 , i love shotokan karate i'm green belt and am starting samurai swordfighting. i was wondering if anyone was there at the midlands karate c'ships in athboy , co meath. i came 1st in the kumite catgory :). i ripped through brown belts almost twice as big as me. i was also wondering what is your opinions on kumite. i think it's a much more important part of karate then people make it out to be. it's the most practical on the street and in fites (beliveve me, i get in alot, and always come out on the top!). i'm not very for control when it comes to fighting on the street. i use all of my techniques correctly, but i just let rage and adrenaline take over, putting in vicious kicks, strikes and punches. i don't get into fights on purpose, it's just that because someone would come up and hit me, i hit them twice as hard and suddenly ''it's on''. but they should face it, they can't beat ME!!!HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!:D

realise that how you act outside reflects on your club, your family and of course yourself. a bad rep as a kid will follow you into your adult life. street fighting is not 'cool' - stick with sport :)

    and treat your momma right

    Seán, relax :)

People shouldn't hit you for no reason. Use sparring time in your classes to work on reality - use reality for other things, like a game of hurling or swapping cards with your friends.

I'm going to presume this is a legitimate post.

Sean, you are the reason you get in fights. Not for a second does anyone here believe they just happen.

Sean, (also assuming this isn't a wind up)
Frankly your attitude needs more work than your Karate, I'm sure if your sensei knew that you were showing off your skills on the street you wouldn't be long in his club.
You have alot to learn and someday someone will teach you a lesson in humility. As John said stick to the sport side of things. I'd reckon Ralph Macchio would take you anyday.:)

If I lived in Athboy I'd be angry too...

I don't think this is a legitimate post lads.

    Roper,

I've checked the users other posts (the life of a mod) and they do appear legitimate. If not, it's a lot of effort for a windup, and not a very funny one at that.

    Mill,
That's not going to help anyone, if that's our intent on this board.

    A note to all users,
With established members, taking the p!ss is acceptable since we're used to each others, with newbs, a degree of understanding is needed.

sure as i said, i don't start fights, if someone has the intent to purposely get in a fight with me then i will do my damnest to come out of it unscathed, or scathed to the very least. i don't show off my skill, i save that for full contact! ;)

    Mate,
If you're getting in fights on a regular basis, then the chances are you're the cause of at least some of them.

    Sean,

The clues are in your first post.
I'm not very for control when it comes to fighting on the street.
i use all of my techniques correctly, but i just let rage and adrenaline take over, putting in vicious kicks, strikes and punches.
i don't get into fights on purpose, it's just that because someone would come up and hit me, i hit them twice as hard and suddenly ''it's on''. but they should face it, they can't beat ME!!!HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!

What do you have to gain from streetfighting? Theres always the chance of more than one. Theres always the chance of busting your hand. Why bother? People think of you as trouble, as a thug if you get in fights all of the time.

What do you say to people that make them come up and hit you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 100 ✭✭ElSeano93

well yeah, to be honest i do cause some of them. but i only start the fites when someone really really pisses me off e.g saying somethin about my friends y'know?

One I found about the mentality of those who get into fights versus those who didn't (based on a thread a few years back asking those people who did get into fights how and why) was down to a a perceived lack of choice/control in the situation.

Someone pissing me off. Someone slagging my mam. Someone insulting my mates. Someone who disagrees with me over who's the best power ranger (it's the green one).

Those who don't seem to walk away or rely on external factors of validation less. If someone slags/insults them, they either are quick witted enough to reply, take the burn, or just wuss out of the fight. :D

If you fly into rages you have little emotional control, and again this is linked to external validation. You seek your sense of worth/image based on how you think other people percieve you or what external 'victories' you can accomplish. Fighting also delivers a massive emotional payoff which is what someone with little emotional control craves.

Sean, although this may sound condescending or that I don't know the full circumstances, but someone insulting your mates is not worth getting into a fight over. Any reaction is a reward in a sort of Operant Conditioning sense. Ignoring them is the best, although the first time you ignore someone their behaviour increases for a while, if you continue to ignore them it will go away.

Ordinarily I'd suggest competitive sport for the aggression and meditation/self reflection. Sean do you do any conditioning for your martial arts, runs, bodyweigh exercises, climbing trees/walls?
