Incorrect diagnosis from GP

About a year ago or so, I got a rash that would appear just about anywhere on my body, usually on limbs though. It was itchy, seriously itchy!!! After a month or so, enough was enough was enough and I went to my GP. He did a quick exam and came to the conclusion that I had urticaria - A condition where your skin is reacting to something it may be allergic to. This reaction produces histamines and forms an itch rash. Rather common, so I've been told. He sent me off to the hospital to get some blood tests done in order for me to get some allergy tests done. He said that chances are, nothing would show and low and behold, nothing showed. So he gave me some prescription anti histamines and when they ran out, I was to use over the counter anti histamines to conteract the condition. I've been doing this since and actually I'm not too bad these days.

The point however, is that I'm not all that sure its urticaria. Urticaria is an allergic reaction, as I have been led to believe. Please correct me otherwise if I am wrong. The reason I say this is that in the past few months, at least 3 of my friends have developed the same symptoms. OK, as it's common, it is conceivable that they have just happened to develop this allergy. But it seems a little bit too coincidental to me. Does anyone have any idea if it COULD be something else or if, in fact, urticaria is actually contagious?

Any ideas would be most helpful as its annoying me.

    Thanks
