    Hi,

Can someone tell me the HD specifications of the Wii? I got the "budget" component cable the other day and i'm getting 480i from the Wii. Is this as good as it gets?

From searching the specs and the net, yeah, that's as good as it gets with the Wii - 480i.

    Not high definition at all.

    pretty crap indeed.

looks like if they do decide to go HD then it will be a new Hardware release. like the Wii-2.... or maybe even Wiii

You should be able to get 480p with the component cables not just 480i. Not much of an improvement but I'd have expected it to be noticible in fast moving games.

The Wii doesn't do high definition. It does do 480p (progressive) though, which is what you should be getting if you are using a component cable and if your TV supports it (ie an LCD TV).

Nintendo have said flat out it's not going to support HD. This is and was no surprise.

    Still looks nice enough though.

They announced it didn't support HD like a year before its release. They aren't interested in it for this gen.

480P (which should be in your options if using component) will make viewing bareable on a HDTV.

played a VC game last night and the TV switched to 568i. although the VC game was Mario from the NES so the HD was a bit pointless.

You do if I remember correctly, there is a setting in "TV Type" (or something like that) for EDTV/HDTV if you have plugged in the component cable. You should select this. Even though it won't give you High Definition it will give you progressive scan.

Setting the Wii to 480p will only work for Wii games. The Wii can display its own games in progressive scan (or EDTV to be precise) because the games are written to display it, but it doesn't alter the resolution of older games. Hence GameCube games or Virtual Console games will play at their original resolution of 576i which is standard european PAL.

Try Play Asia or eBay for the unofficial cable.. Otherwise, you can get the official cable here, for 19.77 euro, delivered.

Not all Wii games either. Some won't support EDTV. That's why there is a little illustration on the back of each game to let you know if it's EDTV compatible or not.

Dunno about the cheapest but convenience counts for a lot in my book. Game had official ones for €35 and aftermarket ones for €25 last time I rang them. Personally I'd rather pay the €5 extra (aftermarket ones seem fine) and get it today than play Zelda in non-widescreen for a week.

i got my one in Virgin in Newbridge for €20.

i have another question about HD. which is better 720p or 1080i?

1080i. Check out this primer on the subject: http://uk.gear.ign.com/articles/552/552433p1.html

Edit: Ok, according to that article its somewhat of a toss-up but I am given to understand that 1080i is better.

    the latter

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,048 ✭✭✭nedd

will have to check that when i get home. cheers.

my parents are getting a HDTV and my bro has a 360. so really looking forward to playing gears of war on 1080i.

even playing zelda on 480p is much better than my crt was.

well it will be nothing compared to gears of war on 1080i (jealous) but it still aint too bad
I wonder if this rumour about the wii having HD specs inside but are dorment will come to anything

Go with whatever the native resolution of your parents' HDTV is. 1080i is better than 720p, BUT (and its a big but) if your TV only supports 720p natively then the TV will have to downscale the signal and you will end up with a worse signal. If you don't know what the native resolution of your folks telly is then try both and see which you prefer. It would have to be a pretty high-end telly to have 1080i native resolution as I understand it.

I seriously doubt it. As I understand it the GPU is capable of drawing a HD image, but not quick enough for a smooth screen refresh. Basically if you think of the slowdown you get when your PC is not powerful enough to run the latest game you'll get the idea. Looks lovely when you see a screenshot but moves in jerks and jumps that render it unplayable.

the TV they are getting is 1080i. so i will give that a go.

i think i said this already in this thread but i heard rumors that like the DS before there is going to be a new version of the hardware released. and that DVD viewing and HD may be included in this. hopefully thats a pile of stinking poop and we wont all have to upgrade.

Stumbled across this short article the other day.....
    http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=37694

It's basically what cianer said above. It aint got the juice to push high resolution at a decent frame rate, Pity.:(
