Hey. Some advice needed for an online downloading novice...

If I'm downloading music to be copied onto CD (and not to be used for an
MP3), what format should I save the file in ?

When you download the music its gonna be in MP3 format. But when you copy it to disc, whatever you use to do so should convert it into CD format anyways.

    save as .wav?

you download as whatever format you download them in. you cannot download a mp3 and save as a wav. you must convert the mp3 after you are done downloading

Indeed, however converting an mp3/m4a/wma/ogg (lossy) to wav (lossless) would be an absolute waste of time.

If you want to burn mp3's onto a CD so that they can be played in a regular CD Player you need to convert them to .wav format and then burn the disk. There's tonnes of freeware programs out there that will convert music files for you, CD-DA Extractor is a particularly good one.

If you have itunes installed on your computer it will convert your selected mp3 files as it burns a CD. This is probably one of the easiest ways to do what you're trying to do.

What he said. If you're only gonna play these cd's with what *were* mp3s then don't expect 100% tipper topper sound, cos you won't have it. An mp3 if 10% of the size of a wav file for a good reason...it's missing 90%

    .

I know but most CD copying software just does this as it copys to the CD. As long as you picked "audio cd" and not "data cd" that is.

Save the file as the MP3 you download and export it to the CD you are burning as AIFF.
