If R2 was the original and the best, why did Nova etc have more listeners than R2 until like 1986?

Another pointless campaign. Gogan is being put out to pasture - and not before time. He's done his bit, and I imagine he doesn't mind the cut in his weekly workload.

I know Nationwide is naff ... but their profile of Larry is great.

Bitter little posters don't HAVE to watch it. go and listen to Radio Nova.

I think people need to realise that Larry Gogan and Marty Whelan have had their time and even though I in no way condone the way they were treated by RTE and in particular John 'personality of a parsnip' Clarke, a weekday slot on a national 'youth' station is not the right place for them. No amount of ridiculous internet polls or staged myspace pages will change this.

I'm afraid I have to disagree. I come from an era when there was NO other Pop outlet on the then tightly-restrained National airwaves. I also lived in an area where there was no other TV channel than RTE1. I know - it sounds like the stone age!

Larry presented the National Top 10 every Thursday night on a half-hour slot given begrudgingly by the moralistic and conservative RTE of the day. Luxembourg, with it's erratic reception, was our next best bet, and BBC Radio 1 was equally unreliable.

So before anyone proceeds to give Larry a verbal kicking and throw him in the Pop dustbin, just pause for a moment and recognise the huge contribution made by the man to the Irish music industry. One of life's gentleman, I will personally miss him, having listened to him since the early 70s.

Regarding useless campaigns it's worth remembering that 2FM attempted to remove the Golden Hour in the mid-80s and uproar followed. Needless to say public opinion held sway and it was restored.

Best of luck Larry - and f*** the begrudgers.

That's true but they shouldn't be given weekend slots either.

People have the most free time at the weekend to listen to music. If they hear John Clarke & Marty Whelan when they're looking for music to listen to while they study etc they'll won't be interested in 2fm during the week, even if they have younger DJs and newer music on weekdays.

FM104, Spin, Beat etc have the same format most of the time. If Spin hired a DJ like Marty, their listenership figures would fall sharply, not jsut for the time that he's on.

2fm need to decide whether they are Ireland's answer to BBC R1 or BBC R2 and stick with it. Even when MITM is ditched and the schedule is reshuffled I really can't see that happening.

Like doh. The listen to radio nova was like a joke!!!

And on anohter note, Marty and Larry shouldn't be compared. Larry knows something, a lot in fact, about music, unlike Marty 'will I play another Van Morrisson track - ah I will' Whelan.

The link from the 'Save Larry' page to the Twink my space is cool. That song on the Twink page is hilarious! http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=107909010
