Cure for a stuck clutch on a virago 125

    Hi,

After being idle for the best part of 5 months I started the virago today as I am selling it during the week. Started perfectly but the clutch is stuck solid. The lever works fine but when I engage gears the bike just lurches forward and cuts out. Any tips or tricks for fixing this fast. :(

    Regards
    Tom

First off make sure the slack in the cable is correct - usually about 3mm at the far end of the lever is about right

then pull the lever back to the bar and keep it there with string/rubber bands/cable ties

leave it for a day or two then see if there's any improvement - sounds like the clutch plates are just stuck together, usually they free up grand. Is the engine (and gearbox, if separate) oil level correct? Low oil could make the clutch sticky.

Another trick is to get the back wheel off the ground (stands preferably), start the bike in top gear, pull in the clutch then rev the bike and hit the back brake, this may free up the plates.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.

You could try stick it in second gear with the ignition OFF , pull in the clutch and rock it back n forth .You need to put a bit of effort into it though.

Thanks for the replies guys, I got it freed up eventually. Tried the trick of lifting the back wheel but the brake started to smoke but clutch did not free. Eventually push started the bike and drove it with the clutch in while changing up and down gears and revving up and down. It suddenly just started working ok. I have left it a few days not and it is still working ok so I am happy that it will be alright.
