i was there in October/November time but i was staying in Santo Domingo, which is amazing and Carbenata or something like that. it was out of season when i was there, so it was really really quiet. but the people are great and island it is beautiful, good food and very cheap. when you are in the shops haggle for everything and really hold out. i got a fanastic painting down from $100 US to $40US - you need to be a bit carefull of some of the locals they can be a bit in your face and when you are lying on the beach, they come up the whole time offering massage, and to do your hair and you need to watch you belongings.
you can go and see the waterfall from jurassic park kite surf and stuff - i am going back hopefully this year but am going to be spending my time in santo domingo - ah beautiful city
