jesus i am o2 also, i have a copy of mac format in my hands and it gave an example on how to set up an e-mail, i followed it and it does not work for me.

I dont want to have a .mac account but it looks like the computer wants me to join .mac.
Also, i have not bought from itunes since my free trial of .mac so i guess when i want to buy i will run into trouble. cant wait for some replies to this thread.

I don't get it, my o2.ie email works fine on my Mac.

Double check the outgoing port number and clarify with NTL what it should be.

That's probably correct but you might need to amend the Port number. This usually defaults to 25 for outgoing. If it's a new Mac it will probably be set to the .mac port number so just change it to 25 and see if that works (incoming should remain 110)

port was already set to 25. i will ring them again tomorrow. they're useless.

What do you mean by "it doesn't work" ?
Do you get an error of any kind ?
Can you collect emails from these accounts ?
You haven't set a password for the SMTP section of the preferences by any chance have you ? If you go to the ntl or O2 webmail system can you collect your email using your username and password - check these just to be sure.

Also make sure you have enabled the accounts under the "Advanced" tab for each account.

I presume ntl are your ISP so you need to use there server for sending email, be sure you have set this as the SMTP server for ALL accounts you want to access from your computer.

have you tried unchecking use SSL?

I've checked your smtp server address and it appears correct.

I am currently using my Mac over 3G GPRS and am not experiencing any difficulty with my o2.ie email either sending or receiving from Mail.

I would suggest that your mail settings may need to be adjusted.

Go to Preferences, Select Accounts. Select the account that is giving you the trouble. In the first tab, make sure the username, password are correct and that the incoming server address is pop3.o2.ie (of o2 email). The outgoing mail server will be that of your isp, such as mail1.eircom.net or smtp.o2.ie. Click on Server settings and make sure the port is 25 and Use SSL is not selected.

Once you have done that select Advanced and make sure the Pop server address is 110 and Use SSL is not selected (o2 don't support this)

.mac shouldn't cause you any difficulty when subscribing to Itunes now that you have completed your free trial.

faceman, why don't you just use another outgoing server or o2's own? I'm with ntl too and have never had any problems using external smtp servers.

thanks for the help people, i will get around to fixing this problem and i will read these messages again.

I am not putting any blame on my imac, o2 or mail, the problem is me. I know the reason mail will not work is ME.
But i will get it working some day. the help above will solve this i am sure.

Tripe h, what exactly is the problem you're having setting up Mail? Is it sending email or receiving it? Or both? Are you getting error messages?

I just tried setting up Mail to use my O2 email and it seems o2 won't let you send email to non-o2 addresses using smtp.o2.ie. It's very slow anyway. Sending via smtp.ntlworld.ie worked fine though.

What are either of you doing using o2 email anyway? They have a barely functioning website so I doubt their email is up to much either.

First of all, your sending email is ALWAYS hosted by your ISP, in this instance NTL. If you are usig o2 GPRS then and only then should your outgoing server be smtp.o2.ie

Secondly, the stability of o2 email has been massively improved over the last few weeks. If you visit the thread on this subject under Mobiles & PDAs you will know that.

Not necessarily, provided you have access you can use another SMTP. Except that some ISPs block all external SMTP servers so you have no choice but to use theirs, others use a smart proxy to relay all email headed to another SMTP server through their own. NTL don't appear to do either as I am able to send email fine using smtp.gmail.com on port 587. I have authentication of course. Where as for my eircom addy which I also use via Mail I have to use smtp.ntlworld.ie.

well, how it all started. ( WARNING THIS IS A RANT)

I have a copy of mac format november issue ( i was buying this magazine since last sept., even before i went mac) and in it is an article called making mail work for you. I did everything the man told me to do.
when all was done i clicked onto mail and it asked for my .mac password. when i asked it to get mail for my o2 a/c it said something like ----the .mac server "mail.mac.com' rejected the password for (my name)---

So in life when i run into a problem i walk away from it for a few days, then go back and fix it when my head stops spinning arond and things always end up fine. but i came in here saw this thread that faceman started, but unfortunately my head had not stopped spinning around at that stage and i saw words and numbers like ---isp, 110, smpt, port, 587, pop.o2.ie...and many many more, looking at these numbers and codes sent my head spinning faster.

so when my head stops spinning i will go back to mail. I am full sure things will be sorted out in the end, they usually do. sorry about my rant.
    i have an eircom connection.

triple h, I'm gonna take a guess and suggest that when you were setting up the o2 email you set it as a .mac account instead of a "pop" account. Anyway setting up Mail is easy, try this:

    - Open up Mail, go to Preferences (in the Mail menu)
    - Click on accounts, then click the + sign in the bottom corner to add a new account
    - A new window will appear, enter these settings:

    Account type - POP
Account description - yourname@o2.ie (or whatever you wish)
Full name - (Your name as you wish it to appear)
    Email address - yourname@o2.ie

    - Click continue

    Incoming mail server - pop.o2.ie
    Username - (your o2 username)
    Password - (your o2 password)

Mail will now check the connection, may take a while.

Now you should enter your isp's outgoing mail server, which in my case is smtp.ntlworld.ie. Which isp are you with? If you don't know you can just enter smtp.o2.ie for now. However you won't be able to send to non-o2 email addresses.

Click continue, click done, and that should be it.

Note, if you had already set up a .mac account, which I assume is expired now, you will probably get an error about mail.mac.com, etc. Ignore it for now.

Hope this helps. Any questions feel free to pm me.

you were 100% right and i followed your direction, above, and guess what it works perfect. thanks very very very much professor.

for the isp i copied lfc1892 and use mail1.eircom.net and i can now send messages to non o2 customers.

i have been using mail for the past half an hour and its great, thanks again.
