Should i pay return postage on Faulty goods i bought - ebay

I bought laptop battery that doesnt work on ebay. It was posted to me from a person in the uk with 99% positive feedback.
On receiving it i tried it in 2 identical laptops and its broken.
After numerous emails to the seller they have agreed that i send it back to them and they will refund the postage from them but not the cost to me to post it back.

Surely this is not fair. They sent me an item that was listed as new. Its full of dirt and scratches - not new by any stretch - it doesnt work, and now they want me to pay postage on it.

    What can i do?

Had a similar situation recently with a fake product. Went through the whole claim process and was told to send it back registered post at cost to me.

Lesson learned was that paypal are no help at all.
