Instead of giving my gf some roses for valentines day I decided to photograph a rose and frame it. Problem is I can't decide whether to do it in colour or b&w! Anyway here is the colour version which I think came out pretty well, would appreciate some c&c on it. it was taken with a d50 and kit lens so all things considering im pretty happy with it!

Also, I've tried converting it to b&w but it just doesn't come out very well so I'm putting the challenge out there for you guys to convert it to b&w because my photoshop skills are limited to say the least! It would be interesting to see

It's a good standard shot, but you need to clone out some of the water drops that have gotten too blown out...They're a wee bit distracting from the rest.

I'll give it a go tomorrow - My laptop is down and I need to use the studio comp's!

Had a real quick go at it there.. Nothing special, but a little bit better than just desaturating. Also tried gradually desaturating from the centre for something a little different.

Had a go at it, think its a bit too dark. Can't wait to see what the more experienced forum members make of it.

Nice photo, as are the others in your gallery. I'm only learning myself but had a go at a rose recently. http://tinyurl.com/2ovh8m :o

    Ooh, nice one Al.

I had a bash but ended up convinced it looked better in colour. If you want to do a bw rose, you could try shooting a white one instead, maybe? It's because there are no white highlights that the conversion ends up looking very dark and grey. You can bump up the reds to go paler, but then you start losing quality, and it's just doesn't look right.

great conversion al ,it's definetly a rose and not a cabbage:p;)

When I was working with it, I defo think it looked better in colour alright.

I'd go for something like this. Accentuate the texture.

It's hard to convert because it's all red, when you adjust in the C mixer you only have constant and the red channel to play with, anyways here's my attempt

Personally I prefer the one in the first post.. the color I mean. Could you not tone it down with border/frame? I think its a really good vibrant red. :)

I agree with Black, the red in the original is pretty vibrant. I think in B+W there's not enough contrast to give it the impact you might want, and fiddling with it just makes it "fiddled-with".

Good idea about the (Photo)Shop-off, though. I like these "take this image and do your stuff to it" posts.

ruu that second one reminds me of an Ansel Admas shot.
i prefer the first shot though, agree that the blown out droplets should be removed

God, this is getting a great response! it's really interesting to see all of the different results but I like Conmikes image the best, it's really pretty. Elven I had cloned out some of the blown out water droplets before you put up your image but mine doesn't compare to yours! Has anybody else found this really interesting?
