Non-Irish parents of Irish born children caught in limbo in the wake of the 2003 citizenship vote must pay careful attention to Irish news sources so that they aren't caught out by ever-changing Irish immigration law. In January 2007, only 3 months before most IBC/05 scheme visas are destined to expire, the Department of Justice, Equality and Law reform announced a renewal procedure.

Details were published in full page ads in some of the local broadsheets and free sheets one day a couple of weeks ago, but this renewal scheme has had very little media coverage. I challenge anyone (Irish citizen or not) to find details of this renewal in any media source. The only recent mention I found on RTE incorrectly referred to the citizenship vote as removing the rights of parental citizenship when it actually removed the citizenship of the irish-born child (foreign parents never got "automatic" citizenship when a child was born here, the referendum did not change this):

A immigration department employee seemed unaware that the renewal scheme went public only a few weeks ago. Here is the date from the justice.ie website:

    Immigration, Asylum & Citizenship Publications
    Date Title
31 January 2007 Notice of IBC/05 Renewal Scheme

And here is a link to the IBC/05 Renewal documents:

Since the traditional media haven't covered this very well and the justice department hasn't sufficient staff to notify individuals, I hope this post can be placed in an appropriate place on this board, perhaps as a sticky.

Bertie lobbied to allow illegal Irish to remain in the U.S. so I hope Ireland will at least avoid deporting families who are here legally.

One unfortunate thing I learned about the IBC/05 scheme is that those who've availed of it appear to be ineligible from certain other types of long term residency which are available to those who aren't parents of irish-born children but who were here for the same time on ordinary work permits. If anyone has more details on this, please post on this thread.

It was announced at the start of January, afew days into the new year. But yes, families are not being kept up to date, a lot of people are afraid for what is going to happen, there is still an atmosphere of deep uncertainty about the future of these children.

The criteria are, unfortunately, very unclear. To speak to someone in person contact:

    Immigrant Council of Ireland
    2 St Andrew Street,
    Dublin 2,
    (01) 674 0200

    Childrens' Rights Alliance
    4 Upper Mount Street
    Dublin 2
    (01) 662 9400

These people are probably the more helpful than the beaurocrats in the department.

I have dealt with the immigration guys a few times with friends and really feel sorry for anyone trying to get information or deal with them on any level.
