Just downloaded Ubuntu 6.10 and i have been looking at it through the live cd option. I quite like it and would like to install it as a dual boot with xp (keeping xp for photoshop and games for now).

I currently have my hard drive partitioned in half with one half for windows and the other as a kind of storage/backup for my vids music e.t.c.

From reading a small bit about actual ubuntu installation, it seems that i need a new partion of unallocated space. I am just wondering when i create this partition, and install ubuntu, will i be able to access my data ,vids, music which are on a ntfs file system partition. Or must these all be transferred to ubuntu partition (hopefully not)

Having recently installed this version of Ubuntu I can tell you that during the installation process it will identify any unused space and you can install there. Unless you want it to it will not affect your current disk contents.

No you won't have to transfer everything to the Ubuntu partition. Linux is able to read NTFS and FAT32 partitions there's plenty of instructions on the web on how to set this up. www.ubuntuguide.org is a good resource for this.

    Cheers
