4gb RAM

I've a fairly recent machine (3 months old) with 2gb ram.

I know XP doesn't recognise anything over 2gb as it's a 32bit OS. But if I stick in 4gb, will it improve performance at all? or will the extra ram go to waste?

I'm mainly thinking about gaming performance here.

    Thanks.

XP recognises 4G alright. Not sure if any games will use > 2GB tbh. I'm sure you'd be better off spending the money on (for example) a nice raptor or something to improve performance.

Won't use it & you don't need it.

2GB is the cut off point after that unless you are running specialist apps that use large amount of RAM it wont do anything for you.

Plus in order to properly use the full 4GB you would need a 64-bit version of Windows otherwise you will have to deal with the memory remapping business under XP that could end up with 3GB of RAM depending on the hardware.

If you want to run Crysis at it's fastest then 2GB of RAM, dual core CPU {Core 2 ideally}, DX10 GPU with 512MB of RAM or more & Vista.
