Over the last few months I seem to be hearing about this subject from lots of different places. During the last couple of years I've switched to using organic/environmentally friendly sanitary towels some of the time with "ordinary" disposables the rest of the time. After reading a long thread on the subject here:

    http://www.itsnoteasybeinggreen.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=74

I've decided that I may give the mooncup a go sometime but in the meantime I definitely want to start using washable pads. In that thread (which had me in stiches at times - there are some very, very funny comments :) ) there are a few recommendations for places to purchase but as it's UK-based so are most of the shops. I've contacted a few to see if they will ship to Ireland but would like to source some here if possible as I'm in general trying to purchase from local, independent businesses when I can. Does anyone have any contacts for Irish suppliers?

There are a few websites with patterns for making your own but I was only recently given my sister's old sewing machine and have yet to figure out how to use it so amn't quite ready for that yet.

I read this, as my wife researched the same thing recently. We switched to eco nappies for the baby, and they will break down in the 'Big Pig' we have on order.

There is a company in parkwest who supplies goods like this. They are called Eco-Baby. They also supply things like biodegradable washing up liquid etc.

Oh, and as per your advice, I have decided not to click on that link.

hey just thought that I'd let you know that ive been using a Mooncup for a while now and it was one of the best desisions i've made.
its so simple and hassel-free. plus you get happy feelings because it is so cheap ( i'm a poor student on minimum wage!!) and so much better for the environment because there is no waste. also no more TSS-fear :P
they sell them in Boots at the moment, for less than 30euro, BARGIN.

    :p

totally agree with alana - the mooncup is great. has a bad rep (for some unknown reason).. never found the other options comforatable at all. the first few months i could definately feel it and it was maybe not as comforatable as a thin pad, but now i don't feel it at all, i'm never caught short for a sanitary product, i'm not contributing to the piles of waste created by this country. no downsides...

Haven't been around for a long while but remembered posting this and thought I'd just update the link to the very long (fifty-something pages now) discussion I originally linked to above.

I've been using the Mooncup for about a year now and I find it dead handy. Takes a bit of practice though but I find myself 'freer' as you can insert it in anticipation of your period.
