73 MG BGT for sale

    Hi,

not sure if i'm allowed to post a car for sale here but i see a few others advertised so here goes.

1973 Teal Blue MG BGT in excellent condition.

    - Bodywork in excellent condition, some barely noticeable paintchips and few small rust bubbles, nothing major, all arches & sills perfect. From a few feet away looks stunning, even up close its hard to see imperfections.

    - New engine 25 years / 37,000 miles ago. Being honest its hard to tell on these old MGs if mileage is truly genuine but engine condition is excellent and drives great so wouldn't be surprised.

    - All MOTs and extensive documentation going back to 1977, literally thousands have been spent on this car during its lifetime and every receipt is there to prove it.

    - Walnut trim interior and wooden sports steering wheel.

    - New mini-light wheels and tyres

    - Kenlow fan fitted

Like most MGs it is not perfect but it is certainly not even close to being a project car, this one is ready for the summer and with a few small jobs will be one of the nicest around, especially in this colour and for the money.

I have many more photos if you'd like to see them, car is in D4 if you'd like to take a look.

Not looking for silly money on this one, offers around 4500k euro.

    thanks

    OshBosh

Sorry Eamon234, without having actually physically seen or driven Oshbosh's car, I must protest against your statement that 4500 "in general" is silly money for an MB B GT and I would aggree with Mike here that the other one is much more silly money than the 4,500 from Oshbosh.

Ofcourse, only a thorough inspection of the car will be the ultimate verdict wether the car is truly worth money, but to be fair, if all the claims Oshbosh is making ARE indeed true (!!!), I don't think it's silly money at all (although I must protest about the retro-fit sunroof and fakewood stickers on the dash). An MB B GT in good overal condition, well kept, mechanically strong, with lots of history, will fetch around 4-6k. Anything below the 4k mark, will need work, somehow or another.

These sort of 'silly money' claims basically stem from the fact that we're being flooded by cars through the likes of Buy and Sell, Carzone and E-bay. There we see literally DOZENS of MG B's, Beetles, Morris Minors, you name it, and yes, they have prices on them of 1k, 2k, 3k, and they're all described as being "in good overal condition", but unfortunately, the cars in that price category are almost all without exception, in poor to very poor condition. But somehow the figures remain in peoples mind and the perception is, that you CAN pick up a good car for that sort of money.

I'd say you can always pick up a car for little or less money, but if it is any GOOD depends on your definition of "GOOD", and I believe that's where the arguments hinges on wether a price is fair or not...

€4,500 does not strike me as excessive for a good MGBGT.

I find that the "eBay habit" of listing the FAULTS of a car instead of its good points is a very good one, much more likely to attarct serious buyers...

Would a well sorted example be winter worthy? Or do they have to be garaged until May? :)

There's no reason why a well sorted example of an MG B Coupe wouldn't be more or less winter worthy than any other well looked after 20, 30 or 40 year old car. Stuff in an MG is pretty basic, no frills so there's less to go wrong, and if it does go wrong, it's usually sorted fairly easily. It's an argument that holds true for the likes of classic Beetles, Volvo's, BMW's, Mini's, etc, and therefore you see those cars used mostly for daily drivers in summer and winter...
But even the more complex machinery, the likes of Citroen DS's, Jaguars and high spec Mercs can be used relatively trouble free in summer AND wintertime: it's all down to maintenance, preservation and common sense. Get your hands on a good (!:D ) car, have the car properly serviced regularly, make sure all the rubbers are up to scratch, so it's not letting in any water anywhere, stay on top of the electrics to make sure there are no dodgy earthing problems, and check the fluids regularly.

If you do all that, there should be no problem using it not only on sunny days, but also in extreme winter conditions. When these cars were new, they weren't designed to be used in the summer only either!

    eamon234,

where are all these MGs that you're talking about ? Honestly, I've been looking around to try and get an idea where the Irish market is at for these cars. There are certainly not that many being offered in the usual places in this price bracket. Check out carzone.ie, autotrader etc etc There are very few which are less than 5k, strangely there are plenty being offered in the 6-7k+ range all the way up to 15k for totally restored versions, although these are mainly on specialist websites.

As i said, mine is not perfect (and i do like the fake wooden inserts although the sunroof is better than nothing it is certainly not a webasto !) but i would say that it is on par or better with anything else being offered in the Irish marketplace at this price, especially considering its extensive history which none of the cars on the Irish market seem to have. You have to remember that everyone factors in haggling space which i have also done, subtract that and i don't see how you can say that i am asking silly money, its really quite reasonable.

I drive this car every week and drove it to Donegal and back for Christmas with no problems. It was also driven around Ireland last summer with no problems either.

To attract punters, you should talk about the floorboards, the sills, other rust prone spots...

The floorboards, sills etc are all fine, i'll double check them again but last time i looked there were no problems. This is one of the reasons i bought this one as it really has very few areas with rust, in fact it took me a while to spot the few tiny bubbles which there are, the arches etc are all perfect, there are a few little areas on some of the chrome which i'm sure will come off with some silvo.

Unless they've just had a total restoration i would say all MGs have a little touch of rust somewhere.

I forgot to mention in the ad that this car also has a stainless steel petrol tank as these are very prone to decay over the years.

Any punters in Dublin fancy a look just let me know !

Stainless Steel tanks DONT decay (just in case anyone was confused!).

Btw does it run on unleaded?

    Mike.

thanks Mike, that didn't make sense did it ? The original tanks were prone to rust is what i meant to say. No it hasn't had the unleaded conversion so i just use the additive. I would do the conversion but not having any problems.

Are there any advantages other than not having to put the additive in ?
