    Howydi,
I have just unwrapped my iMac from its box and I'm gonna play with it :)

I want to try to emulate the apps i'm using on my pc as much as i can on my imac to ease the crossover. The apps i use that i'm most concerned about are the following
    Winamp
    uTorrent
    GaIM
    Filezilla
    Soulseek
    Google Talk
    MS Office

What are the mac alternatives to those apps? I'm not a fan of iTunes at all, so i'm looking for something similar to winamp for mac.

What other essential software would you recommend me? I'm into webdevelopment and media if it helps. Thanks

    Cheers guys,

(how do you make the icons in the "systray" pop out when you roll over them?) Christ! I feel like a right noober.

systray? eh you mean the Dock? Go Apple menu - System Prefs - Dock - Turn on magnification.

As far as torrent programs go the two best ones afaik are Transmission and Azureus. I use Azureus but try them both and decide.

    www.versiontracker.com

There is an MS Office for mac but Microsoft haven't released the Intel version yet - later this year I believe.

Oh and use Adium for all your IM needs. It supports Google Talk as well afaik.

Adium for IM/messengers needs. Neo Office is free office sortware, though you could shell out for MS Office for Mac if you need to.

Applejack - great for solving startup issues and cache problems, although with a mac these problems should be extremely rare if at all, but its good to have installed just in case.

Azureus for torrents is my personal favorite but each to their own.

Mactheripper for copying dvd's that you own the copyright to.

Flip4mac allows you to play windows media content through quicktime.

Toast Titanium is a great burning utility for cd's and dvd's.

iTunes runs better on a mac than it does on a pc imho, and 7.1 is only around the corner so that should hopefully be the icing on the cake.

Parallels is great for running other operating systems on the mac, will also let you see how your development content will look on a windows machine, bootcamp is okay, but once you get used to the mac hopefully you will never feel the need to boot into windows. Ideally you will want 2gb's of ram for the best experience.

Sharepoints is a great little app for sharing volumes between machine or across networks and can take the pain out of modifying permissions.

    Quicksilver great application launcher

VLC same as windows will play anything you can throw at it.

as mentioned above versiontracker is a greta resource for apps and so is macupdate.

good luck with the new mac ;) welcome back from the darkside.
