Spent my first day really trying to buy the Wii. In the past I usually just asked do you have get no as an answer and then move on.

But today I was told no but you can prebook the next order.

I asked about deals and was told in most shops

    €270 for the console
€320 for console plus extra game
€370 for console plus 2 extra games.

    Then I went to argos

Best deal there was €320 for console plus extra 2 games.

    Thats €50 difference.

    Whats the deal with that?

Argos does, hence the cheaper price there.

Gamestop and the like are thieves, gaming has become so huge over the past few years retailers are just milking it.

Seriously when my local Gamestop tried to charge me €55 for a DS game, that's when I said **** that, back to buying online for me.

The deal is that the console SHOULD retail for only €250. The retailers add on the extra cause they know people will pay - simple as that.

I payed €270 for mine in Smyths (just the console). I can't really complain though, because I knew the deal before I went in so I had the choice. The place is only down the road from me, so I figured the extra €20 was worth the added hassle of trying to get one somewhere else.

Why 'SHOULD' the console retail for any price? Surely in a free market economy a seller can seek any price they wish for their wares? In fact.. isn't it against the law to 'fix' a price?

I didn't know that, in-fact if I remember correctly the head of Sony in the UK went through considerable lengths to fix the price of the PS3, I could have read it wrong though so don't hold me to it.I think they should stick as close to the RRP as possible though, that's just my opinion though, €20 is a bit much, €10 at most.

Just checked; price fixing is forbidden under the Competition Act 2002, & Amendment Act 2006. http://www.tca.ie/EnforcingCompetitionLaw/CompetitionLaw/CompetitionLaw.aspx

Sony UK ( & Ireland) announced SRPs.. Suggested Retail Prices for their territories. Much more sensible than Nintendo who announced a SRP for all of Europe, knowing they wouldn't account for the different VAT rates etc. At least Sony are pointing out where they believe pricing will differ..

Exactly and price fixing is banned in an attempt to reduce the price of goods not increase them.

The fact that so many stores have selected 270 Euro as the price of the console is closer to price fixing because they are obviously looking at what each other are doing. Its a little bit too much of a coincidence they all decided to over charge by the same amount.

I've a €100 One4All voucher which is going towards my Wii Purchase.. it doesn't expire til June so i'll gladly wait til demand seems to lighten a bit (which it's bound to between now and June).

The girlfriend's going up to Dublin early next month so might send her up with the vouchers to Argos on the off-chance - simply because their bundles sound tempting. But not holding my breath on getting any.

Otherwise, i'll buy it in Smyth's here in Sligo whenever they get them in - any batch before the expiry in June will do me.

My point is.. it's not overcharging if there is no set price. The market finds its' own level.. which in this case is €20 more than Nintendo suggested for Europe..

It's 270 in Finland as well.

Well actually, it's only higher than Nintendo's RRP in euro for Europe. The RRP for the UK is £179, which converts to about €268.50 and since several gaming retailers in Ireland are based in the UK, it gives a reason for them all pricing it at the same amount. €270 wasn't just a magical number plucked from the air.

    €309 in Sweden :D
