THis is purely to satisfy my own curiosity, but what is the point in tracer rounds?

The idea was to let machine gunners see where their rounds were hitting, which would let them "walk" the rounds onto target.

Unfortunately, for a long time, tracer rounds had a different ballistic profile to ball, so when you were hitting the target witht he tracers, around 80% of you ammo was missing.

    They aren't.

Some local areas restrict their use - due to the fact they tend to start grass fires in very dry areas.
