brakes "screech plates"?

can anyone tell me how they work and why the hell mechanics seem to love removing them?

my dad has to get new discs and pads on his GS300 and apparently the screech plates are missing. in fact he's replacing new brakes because of very bad vibrations caused by warped discs.

it seems that brakes are a weak point on the gs300. now, he's worried about facing disaster by going for spurious parts and no screech plates.

sound risky? any words of wisdom?

Could the screeching be caused by a lack of copper(high temp) grease on the back of the pads?

Copper grease as kbannon says is the way to sto the squeal.

Discs warp in virtually all modern cars as the material used in their manufacture is soft so as to give greater effectiveness to the brakes. They should last 60-70K miles at any rate and are not really too expensive to replace.
