I'm looking to buy some rugby boots, a gumshield and a scrum cap(which I probably won't use but wouldn't mind having). In terms of quality and price what would you recommend?

Are you a back or a forward? If you are a back and football boots will do just fine tbh.

To get rugby boots I think arnotts or elvery's are your best bets.

As for gumshields you can go for the cheap 3e ones available in any sports shop, they do the job and if you get a band in your mouth you wont lose all your teeth, however if you plan on playing rugby for a good while I highly reccommend getting one made by your dentist, i've had one for the last four years and its brilliant, its moulded perfectly to your teeth, is very comfortable and has brilliant protection, obviously they are a lot more expensive then the 3e jobs but sixty euro is hardly a mountain of money.... as for scrum caps, you'd get them in the likes of elverys and arnotts too i'd imagine, whichever one feels comfortable should do the trick, honeycomb ones ive been told are good ive never used them though.

I have played at 2 and 9 in the past, I'm looking to get back into rugby but I threw out all my old stuff about three years ago.

In terms of brands which is the best in the boot department?

I play 2, have used the 6 or 8-studded lowcuts since I was about 12 or 13 I think, so 18 years or so. Have been through Adidas, Asics, Umbro, Nike, currently Mizuno. Much of a muchness to be honest, except the umbro didn't seem to last as long as the adidas. the Nike Airs were good, cept I'm not a fan of Nike. Used go through a pair of boots a season in schools, back when we'd train and play 6 days a week. Now they last me ages!;)

If you can get the 8 stud (6 at front and 2 at rear), they're better for grip in the scrum when you're off your heels. The 4 studs at the front tend to collect less crud if you're a runner though, especially if the ground is very sticky. To be honest much of a muchness. Wouldn't be bothered with the steel-toed high boots any more - gave up on them after about 2 seasons when I discovered they didn't do anything more than lowcuts anyway.

Personally wouldn't be bothered with the scrum cap.

Whatever you do dont get a scrum-cap - opposition players love seeing the guy who comes out with the shoulder pads, gloves and scrum cap and set out to target him, its a fact.

Even just random guys wearing a scrum cap - there is no need for most players to wear a scrum cap.

Where did you get that BS from? Most forwards wear sholder pads, alot of front rows wear pads and caps. Loads of hookers and back/second row wear gloves especially for lineouts. Shoulder pads and scrum caps are a big confidence boost for lots of players as they remove a certain amount of fear of gettin hurt.

Anybody who goes out to target these guys is a knob, a player should be concentrating on the game rather than one guy anyway.

I always wear armour and gloves (im a hooker) and used to wear a helmet and ive never been "targeted".

Not a junior rugby player he doesnt need any of that and neither do you, you must tell me when you next play so i can go down and have a laugh at robocop with all the armour.

Professionals or guys playing AIL yes can wear it as some of the players they will playing against are semi-pro and even pro and its 25 times more physical and tougher, not junior rugby which is all he will be playing he doesnt.

Junior rugby is very soft and you need none of that, players have gone years without it and there is more injuries in todays game than ever before and this is with all this armour people are wearing.

Guys playing over 5/6 years ago would laugh at all this armour some of the players go out with.

Lfc you seem to talk alot of crap and this is just more of it. Its pretty evident that you have not played much rugby or else your just stupid.

At the moment i mostly play two games a week and train 2/3 times depending on recovery. I always wear armour that has shoulder pads and a chest plate. Being a hooker this saves my shoulders from lots of bruising and before i wore armour, at the end of a game sometimes my shoulders used to be almost bleeding from the scrums. It makes no sense why i would not wear them.

Your argument about the AIL being tougher makes no sense because AIL players are tougher themselves. The toughness of players are usually relative to their level.

Oh and your more than welcome to come along and see if i look like robocop if you want, but i think you will find at least another 6/7 of the forwards wearing somthing similar.

LFC is talking rubbish. I play No.2 as well. I use shoulder pads from time to time but while I agree they are not essential they do make a slight difference and sometimes that’s all you need.

In terms of looking to go after the guy with all the armour on *pffffffft* aim for the guy with the ball end of story even if he is wearing a pink flannel shirt. Who cares he has the ball.

But back to the original post - As mentioned I play hooker. Got a smashing pair of boots for a Christmas gift. Nice pair of Gilbet with 8 studs and hard toe (not stell toe capped). Very comfy and easy to maintain. only gripe I have is they had 2 long studs and 6 medium. I changed them all for long studs due to the weather.

Gum shields - a nice selection is the shock gum shield but they are just a bit thicker and a bit more expensive.

Head gear - don’t wear it so no comment.

    Nukem

Sundy listen to those who know more than you about rugby and have played to a higher standard than you do and still plays.
Jealous of people who have played a higher standard than you,get over it.

I would love to go down and watch Robocop playing J.5 standard but i dont have time.

If you really need shoulder pads you really need toughening up,they may indeed feel comfortable but they are not essential so i wouldnt recommend them to GDM thats what im saying.

The shoulder pads looked nice on Jerry Flannery yesterday didnt they ?

You hookers should concentrate on your throwing not head gear, gloves and and pads.

Go play American Football if you need armour and padding to beat the band.

    End of

No attitude Crash, merely stating the facts, nothing rude or anything in my opinion just because people complain because they disagree i dont deserve a warning.

Maybe i have to accept the way players of different standards view rugby armour etc etc and will take this into consideration in future.

    ;)

Haha LFC this thread is amusing me, i love the way you assume you play a higher level of rugby than anyone on it here.

I never said all players wear them, but even some of rugbys hard men wear armour. I suppose you dont like the insulation tops either? Only for wusses who dont play AIL?

Oh and my throwing is fine thanks, so ican spend all the time i like thinking about accessories.
