No, as Virgin Media didn't buy NTL Ireland out.

    Basically:

Liberty Media, a US cable operator & media company bought Chorus a while back. They picked up NTL (Ireland) a few months ago.

Liberty operate a number of cable companies in Europe branded as UPC.

    Company history : http://www.fundinguniverse.com/company-histories/United-PanEurope-Communications-NV-Company-History.html

    It's "United PanEuropean Communications" UPC

Confusingly they once owned Chorus before, sold it and now own it again.

NTL Ireland itself was never the quality of other NTL systems in UK or elsewhere as they bought it, not built it. UPC has been busy for months fixing the neglect of the last 20 years or so so that everyone will eventually get Digital & broadband and not a interference ridden analogue only feed.

The NTL call centre is now in Chorus premises in Limerick with actually some previous NTL Ireland staff

    The history's complicated:

Irish Multichannel was a joint venture between Independent News and Media and TCI (now Liberty Media) - it basically bought up and merged a load of totally incompatable regional cable companies and MMDS operators. The key two being Cork Communications (aka Cork Multichannel) and CMI.

They intended to properly consolidate all the various platforms they had, but never quite got around to it due to lack of funds. The dot.com bubble burst and their parent company tightened the purse strings.

Liberty then bought out the Independent News/Media shares and took outright control of Chorus. It then transfered ownership to UGC Europe (A subsiduary).

Then UGC Europe bought NTL Ireland.

UGC Europe then became Liberty Global Europe.

It decided to merge its Irish assets and rebrand them as UPC

Hopefully, finally completeing the consolidation of the Irish cable networks and upgrading them in the process.

Chorus started out as a good idea! It was just shamefully underfunded.
