Jim79 in case you don't know theres a coin and banknote fair on at the RDS next weekend. Theres only 2 of these fairs on a year and this is the bigger of the 2 so I wouldn't miss it. Coin News the UK mag usually have a stall there and they sell a book with current prices. Most collectors like me usually collect old books because of their numismatic information but of course any prices in them are well out of date.

It really depends the specific area of your interest. "Irish money" is usually split into lots of categories with books specialising in different ones.

I was aware that the fair was coming around again, but I don’t think I can get to it. It certainly would be very informative.

I purchased the 11th edition of Collecting world coins from 1901 to 2006. it was the only book I could find on the topic in Easons. I find it very informative even though it covers so many countries around the world that I have no clue about.

Irish coinage interests me most, I am just getting familiar with 17th century gunmoney. I am confident that it is just the tip of the iceberg.

So even though that book is good I would prefer to get a book that was more focused on Europe and went back further than the 20th century. I think I will have a search on amazon. They have book reviews that I found useful in the past.

That be the Krause book you have I presume. I have the same one but to 2003.

For Irish coinage alone I must have over 10 different books. I think a must have and perfect for starting off is a catalogue called "Coins and tokens of Ireland" by Seaby. It was printed I think in the 70's so prices are out of date but it's the one I open the most when referring to Irish coins. Even at the coin fairs you see people going around with this book in their hands. It covers from the first Irish coinage, Hiberno-Norse to Decimal and of course tokens. It's not very specific on any one area but all the main important dates and varieties are noted. I see them on ebay now and again for about 10 or 15 euro.

Theres also an Irish numismatics association which hold regular meetings and have an extensive library available to members.

Blade, you are spot on, it is the Krause book and thanks for the suggestion.

You might be interested in these though the postage is a bit high. One of these is the book I was talking about.
