Boxin Liddell and Tito Ortiz

I think I saw a bit of a thread like this recently but couldn't find it to read.
I haven't seen that many of recent(Last year) UfC and Pride. Saw the Chuck Liddell and Tito Ortiz fight though. And The Cro Crop vs ?
Kinda looked like not very skilled boxing. Throwin big bombs, heavy haymakers, not much of a gaurd to speak of; hands v low. Watchin a boxin match, there seems to be a lot more skill developed and defence against wild punchs.
The obvious answer to this is, boxin is so unrealistic, and wouldn't have a defence against leg kicks and takedowns.
Chuck demonstrated an excellent take down defence. With that I'm assuming their skill is neutralising other stuff to. I don't expect I could get in with good kicks, or grapple with them.
He's a champion for good reason.
That said, strictly in terms of the boxing that was the main of the fight.it seemed a bit more like a brawl between two very powerful opponents.

I watched that video and now I kinda want some Xyience... that was the message right?

Anyway, compare boxing to MMA, then compare rugby with GAA- a lot of similar skills required but two different games requiring different techniques.

    Hiya

Thanks for the link. Very interesting. Big, knock ye out haymakers. Fairly powerful lookin

"Anyway, compare boxing to MMA, then compare rugby with GAA- a lot of similar skills required but two different games requiring different techniques."

A good point. But MMA looks at sports that require similar skills, and if finding something useful, learn from it. You don't have to become a Thai boxer, but if you can learn kick like em then cool. Same with other ways of isolating something, finding someone who does it really well, and see if something can be learned. I won't be the same cause theres so much more involved.
I just found myself a bit surprised by that fight, and by the way striking looks, which has become so much more popular again in MMA .
As everything else was pretty much neutralised in that fight, it was primarily a fight of who can punch the other guy in the head better. As that is what boxers spend most of their time doing...
If it was only punching allowed, and Chuck was against a boxer, would he fight differently? They would be using different skills\attacks\defences.
Kinda what UFC was about in first place. Comparing fighters from different styles. Only I'm trying to limit it. Not to compare fighters, only to compare one aspect, to see the different merits.

If you want to limit it then go back and watch the original UFC's?

Cool clip Pearse. Here's Chuck's trainer (one of em anyway) doing the left hook.

Interesting idea on that video from crossfit. Somewhat reminds me of how naseem used to hold his hands / his famous knockout punches.

I,ve said it before and will say it again-mma is evolving and the newest evolution is mma stand up fighters are learning to turn the fights into boxing matches-this is done by preventing take downs and only kicking if its a dead cert-only the top stand up boys are doing this at the moment but watchin it is blatantly obvious and will catch on with the up and coming kids-soon only the ground fighters will throw kicks and the standard of boxing will improve-tito and chuck both have specific boxing coaches now and this is a new development for the sport-personally i just wish i focused more on sprawling as im only learning the tactics day by day! can only be good for the fans-still love the bjj though..:D
