Hello. It looks like i'll be renting a house with a few mates on seaview avenue in east wall. I was just wondering what the area was like. I know it looks a bit rough at the moment but it has lots of charm. Whats the quickest and safest way of walking to the city centre? Is fairview the best place to go for a few beers? Is it dangerous at night time? I'm a bit of a wuss. Thanks.

I lived deep deep in the heart of East Wall for a while a couple of years ago.

    I couldn't wait to leave.
My neighbours were really nice, real locals and very friendly. They were the best part of living there.

I found East Wall itself to be grey, depressing, dull, messy..
I was egged by a gang of kids walking home from work one day.
My car was driven into by joyriders while parked outside the house.
There's bugger all shops in the immediate vacinity.

Having said that though, it's reasonably close to town. There's a few ways to walk in, I usually went down to the quays, but from Seaview Avenue, North Strand would probably be handier.
The pub on East Wall road is okay, but the pubs in Fairview are nicer.

I didn't like East Wall, but there are lots of people renting/living there who do.

I seem to remember a huge East Wall thread here not so long ago.

Anyway, I lived there for seven year's and hated the kip.

But OP your only renting so it should be cool.

I have a friend living there, I'm nearly sure it's called Seaview Avenue... isn't it in Clontarf? Just off the coast road, past the Yacht? Maybe not.
Anyway OP, maybe drive around at a few different times during the day/ week to get a better feel for the area and what goes on weekend nights, etc.

Lived in East Wall for 12 Years, sold up because the house was too small. Great place, never had a bit of hassle. Got to know my neighbours and their kids well, joined up with the local watersports club. Its the type of area where your neighbours bring in your bins for you if you are home late. I was single then and went to town on Fridays, Saturdays and sometimes on Sundays and Thursdays. Walked home every time and only once got hassle. Managed to leg it. It is a bit dull and grey, but its city living, also you are sort of "trapped" there during the rush hours if you are car relient. I mountain biked it everywhere.

My neighbours on the other hand (from Cork) hated it, they wouldn't answer their door, they snubbed the locals. Didn't socialise locally at all. They just slept and watched TV there really.

(I got egged in Carlow before, that's not an East Wall thing)

Agreed. It's a skanger thing. My mate got egged in Greystones once. It happens everywhere.

I used to walk home alone aswell, and never got any hassle. But having said that, I never felt 'safe' when I was walking home. And I don't mean I felt unsafe in East Wall itself, but in the areas I had to wander through to get there.

Yeah, I suppose, its a cold, dark, dreary walk home, I liked it though. Don't know why. When I moved in the Sherrif st. flats were just demolished, interesting things going on there! The IFSC is there now. Regarding local pubs Harryboo, you might as well just hit town! Its at your feet... Fairview is ok, just normal pubs I guess, you also have Seabank House and Valance and MGraths, both local pubs. The IFSC is within walking distance, plenty there to eat and drink. The best thing for you Harrboo is walking past the taxi ranks for a short stroll home!

A word of warning, your neighbours wont appreciate noise and misbehaviour. They grew up in close proximity to each other and respect each other in that way.

There ya go. Its horse's for course's. I hated it, my wife loved it (she's a townie, lol). I made a mint on the house sale :) etc..

And I'll give you a laugh. Since moving out I'd actually had more than one nightmare that I couldn't afford to stay living where I am and actually moved back to East Wall!.

    Malahide. Doesn't compare does it!.

(I mean to East Wall & not Raheny).

I'd considered Raheny first actually, right facing St.Anne's park. A lovely area.

Which part of Seaview Av; the villas or the council-style houses. Ilived on Seaview for four years. The neighbours are great, they look out for each other, make an effort to get to know you, they are friendly and tolerant of each other. The kids are a hassle, there is a sense in the evening that the streets are being given over to them, not that it is actually dangerous, just that in the evening the streets belong to the kids. The corner of Church Road and Seaview used to be particularly bad for drinking, handing over stolen cars, selling drugs, etc, it was a kind of blind spot. This has probably changed since the Lighthouse was build. I had my window broken once, someone tried to steal a visitors car, wrecking the ignition, another time someone tried to steal a motor bike belonging to a visitor, often the kids shout abuse. Church Road, the main drag, is depressing: messy and drab.

The area nearby is great, there are cranes, the birds, on the Tolka, real rus in urbe, there is Fairview Park, during the day a well used and attractive park, there is Clontarf Prom if you run, nice pubs in Fairview, Gaffneys for eg with its funny naive murals of local scenes, places to eat in the IFSC, an interesting walk to town with the Liffey to look at and all the development along Wapping St etc, an excuse to use the Sean O'Casey bridge.

I have lived in east wall all my life and love it, If the blow in's were to get to know the locals they would be more at home here. As for the millions of kids that hang around, most of them are great kids, minus a hand full of them.

I have never heard of anyone being attacked after dark, and robbed cars are a rare thing. As for the eggs, well i think that happens everywhere,

It may look dull and depressing, but its full of lovely people and has great community spirit.

    Inner City Girl.......:)
