After hearing that dell maybe cutting jobs ,I was a bit puzzled at the time of the year they have decided to come out with this:confused:

It's normally quiet at this time of the year for computer sales and on top of that ,theres lots of customers holding on until may/june until some of the major bugs have been fixed with their new OS.
Dell can't sell Pc's without an operating system can they ?

I was contimplating buying a dell around june ,I've bought two in the past five years.
If they cut jobs or start messing around ,I will never buy from them again.

    Uhh...what?

I'm sorry but I fail to make any sense of that post. Are you saying that because Dell may be letting some staff go, you won't ever buy their products? That's a bit - actually, very - ridiculous.

Thanks for that ,ever hear of kicking someone while they're down??

They seem to be taking advantage of the fact that it's quiet at the moment and theres nothing anyone could do about making sales targets at the moment.

Probably something to do with Michael Dell taking over CEO-ship of the company again only very recently. He wants to shake things up as was quoted as saying his project will be to invent Dell V2.0

I can't see them sticking around in Ireland for much longer. I'd say you can watch out for some announcement of a new manufacturing facility somewhere in one of the EU ascetion states, or even China, before the end of Q2 this year.

I'd like to say that I admire your personal stance, but in the real consumer world, one man does not make a difference.

The story from rte.ie/business mentions that managers would be reduced, I'm sure more news will follow.
Only a matter of days after returning as chief executive of computer giant Dell, Michael Dell has told workers that cutbacks are coming.

An email was circulated among Dell employees last Friday announcing that all bonuses for 2006 were being cancelled and the number of managers in the company was being reduced.

The company, which has operations in Limerick, Bray and Dublin, lost its number one spot in the computer making industry to Hewlett Packard last year.

They spent two years piddling about in the Czech Republic and Poland before deciding on Łódź for a new facility six months ago. They've no reason to build another European one in addition to Łódź. A Chinese factory is too far to adequately supply Europe.

A Chinese factory is too far to adequately supply Europe.

With the world as it is now , anywhere can be supplied from anywhere. Location is irrelevant in terms of supply , all that matters is cost.

It would be brilliant for manufacturing in Ireland if it were the case that distance matters. However assembly places like dell are just warehouses full of parts , they can move it and be set up in china in less than two months.
As soon as it becomes apparent that there are big savings to be made from doing it somewhere else then thats what will happen. Its just a matter of time and with Dell in the state they are at the moment I wouldn't imagine its that far away.

Dell are under a lot of pressure , they have lost their number one position to HP , confidence is down in their notebooks and PC's in general , Michael Dell has stepped back in to " rescue" the company and he has to bow to what the shareholders dictate.
Note that even though Dell still posted a handsome profit , its down on previous years and the share price is diving ,that means trouble.

For Dell and any other company in a crisis , the standard practice is to streamline and cut back , this will boost the share price in the short term , keeping the shareholders happy and allowing leeway for a long term strategy.
Thats what every tech company does every time shares dive , Dell are no different.

Intel in Ireland is a different story , the leixlip plant is a Wafer Fab , an incredibly complex and costly unit to set up. ( in the region of 5-7 billion ) It would cost just as much to move such a plant as to build a new one , so that plant should be safe until technology leaves 300m wafers behind.

Not a comp/tech issue. Moving to work/jobs, although news/media could be a contender. Feel free to move again.

Confidence is down - i imagine this has a good bit to do with moving their support to India, its a nightmare talking to them, they have introduced a lot of quality measures in India which has improved things but its still dire, i wonder if the support for the US is in India too, this would not go down well at all, americans are not that patient with people they can't clearly understand. I have stopped buying Dell because of the support, had a nightmare on two occasions, plus on the latest Dell i bought, i don't think its well built and wouldn't be surprised if it dies anytime soon. Also Dell have good deals, but for anybody in the know who wants to maybe have some more memory or faster processor they are terribly over priced - another think that put me of Dell. Plus their laptops are ugly bar the xps
