    Hi,

just found this forum so thought i'd join and see what goes on.

I've just moved to Dublin about a year ago and brought my 1982 230CE with me, which drives great although the bodywork could be better. Its nautic blue with cream 1/2 leatherett interior, the nicest combination in my opinion. Since i've been here its been attacked twice, first time they took the bonnet star and pulled back the chrome on top of the driver's door and didn't get in, second time they went at it with a screwdriver to the door handle and still couldn't get it but left a nice little slit in the door above the handle as well as messing up the lock, which of course still works, these cars are just fantastic i think, pity every chav scum bag thinks they're an easy target.

I also have a 1973 teal blue MG BGT which is in really nice condition but i keep that one for weekends as slow traffic is not its forte and the automatic gearbox in the Merc is so much nicer around town.

Check out this W123 coupe, probably the nicest you're every likely to see.

If anyone else has MGs or Merc coupes in Dublin, i'd love to hear from you,

    cheers

    Oshbosh

Wow - the merc looks lovely, sorry to hear about the knackers having a go at it though :(

Where are you that people keep having a go at it?

Maybe because of the tinted windows they think there is a big sound system in it or something. Is there a big red flashing alarm light on it at night, so its obvious that the alarm is on?

    Lovely cars

ah, that's not mine unfortunately but one day hopefully.

first time was at Skankhill DART station, second time was in the underground car park of my apartment block, here's one of my car when i got it, which was 5 years ago now, not as nice as the custom but not bad, it has the usual rusty bits now but i just don't have the time, skills or space to do the work myself, it would be too expensive to pay someone to do it so i just keep driving it and try not to think about the bodywork too much. Maybe someone here knows where i could get a cheap restoration done ?

Nice car indeed those W123 Coupes !

I prefer them to look original though, sorry to hear about your misfortune withthe scumbags !

mine is all original, including the rusty bits, mostly the wheel arches and a few bits on the bonnet.

Does anyone know how to fix these without a blow torch, even something that would last just a few years, maybe i can do it myself if its not too difficult ? I could put those chrome rims on but i just don't like them.

It looks great at night :D

    Hey Oshbosh, you're very welcome...
I love the W123 coupes, one of my fave mercs. I have a W114 saloon meself, tried to find a coupe version, but good ones are hard to come by so i settled for the saloon for starters.
Not sure if you're aware of it, but cars in Ireland aged over 30yrs pay only E44 road tax p/a, irrespective of engine size, and are also exempt from the NCT. Im guessing your coupe is around 1980-82? Sorry, just reread your post stating 1982, D'Oh!
Im sure Ben (MercMad) will be in touch, but are you also aware of the MB Club - has a lot of benefits and expert tech knowledge. Theres a monthly pub meet, 1st wednesday of every month, at Kielys pub in Mount Merrion.
As regards getting a cheap resto job, it will be that, cheap. I know from my own experience that its better to get it done right (i know, costly though).
Theres plenty of advice and good references available both here and thru the MB club.

i'd be glad to hear about the club, i've never really been much of a mechanic but i think some small jobs would make a big difference, sometimes its better to just buy a good one rather than spend a lot of money restoring. I should have spent the money on the merc rather than buy the MG but my first car was an MG so nostagia got the better of me. Something will have to go and it will probably be the MG, any MG fans in here interested ?

That's the gal before I imported her. Thankfully she has evaded the dirtbags' radar so far....touch wood.

    Welcome by the way!

welcome abroad. watch out though as this place SERIOUSLY addictive..

got myself an R129 before xmas and oh so happy. been in newer cars for the past ten years bmws/volvos/VWs but after driving the merc it dawned on me "its not about the destination, its all about the journey" and that is the feeling this car gives me.

it sure is thirsty but she is worth it!.. :)

btw OP, your merc is a tasty bit of kit and can only sympathise with you regarding those littles bastards
