Tiredness....

I've noticed a good while now that I tend to feel tired in the middle of the day, between two and four/five. I tend to yawn a lot and generally feel quite drowsy. It has occured once or twice that whilst reading a book I while feeling this way, I have dosed off for a few minutes.

I don't normally drink a lot of coffee or tea, maybe one or two cups a day...one in the morning at breakfast (8am) and one at lunch (rarely though). I am thinking it may be due to my late hours...I normally do not actually go to sleep until 12:30am or 1am at times (though I am out of bed at 7:30am unfortunately...!), as I do not feel tired then. I do exercise and get out a lot so that should not be happening. Could it just be the way my body clock is working?

I used to work in a restaurant two or three years ago and I think that knocked my body clock off balance as I used not get home till about 1am on the nights I worked there and I was not at all used to that at the time....

This appears to be absolutely 100% completely normal. It happens to everyone in my office, hits me at around 2.30. The guy sitting next to me has been known to snooze off in his chair. Have you heard that soup ad referring to the 3pm slump? There's your problem.

Grand job so! It is quite annoying though and to be honest I dont want to use coffee to help get rid of it as I don't believe it would work...unless I kept drinking coffee!

Yup, sounds normal and happens to everyone.
I believe the General cause is lunch :)
After your lunch meal you tend to feel drowsy, goes for any major meal bar brekky! Its your body's way of dealing with the food/work versus the hours your awake, preety much its telling you to shut down for an hour and regen/digest, a good combatent is say a banana or some slow energy releasing food.

Alternativly, have a coffee after your food.
I generally do that, then have a snoose on the bus home :) works well.

I feel the same way in the afternoon. I usually get up and walk around the building or stick my head out into the cold New England air. That's enough to wake anyone up :p

Good idea's there. I just want to stay away from the coffee!!! I'm trying to be hgealthy for the next two weeks on to see how I will feel at the end of it!

A nice sit down or a walk may do the trick...howveer with 2pm lecturtes that aint always an option damn!

I get that too sometimes, and its worse if Im dehydrated. Having a drink of water and a walk about helps me.

Have a slow release carb breakfast like porridge when you get up and fruit at lunch to give you some sugar. And drink loads of water. Maybe go for a brisk walk at lunch to get some energy. You could try some multi vitamins to make sure you're getting enough of what you need. Multibionta gives you energy I think.... And try get 7-8 hours sleep a night.

George Dubya has "power naps" every day to help him be the best president he can be. Happens to everyone... :p

That bloody soup ad. What a bunch of kak. The last thing you want when you're falling asleep in the afternoon is a cup of hot soup! Why not have some warm cream to go with it!

This happens to most people OP. It's often down to your body trying to digest your lunch, while your brain tries to concentrate at the same time. Dehydration is another cause. Eat less for lunch, or drink more water. This used to happen to me all the time, but I drink loads of water now, and it rarely happens anymore..

What about drinking more coffee? Or an alternative energy drink, such as Red Bull (if you don't have a problem with them)

Getting some fresh air tends to help as well, especially if you take off your jumper and go for a mini-run or even stand outside.

I never used to drink coffee, but having now started it has a pretty strong effect on me, as does sitting beside an open window while I study. You may be cold, but you should at least be more perceptive!:)

    Try getting more sleep?

if you don't want to try caffne or stimulants try and not eat a big lunch(if you currently do) of meat, two vege and a load of spuds. I find its nearly impossible to stay awake after something like that.

Also try having a banana when you feel drowsy, they are pretty high in energy and aren't bad for you like caffine/speed;)

You don't have to drink the coffee. Balance the hot mug on your lap - that'll keep you focused and awake!

Seriously though, it may be low hydration. Most people don't take enough fluids and by the middle of the day will have lost sufficient to feel the effects. Try drinking more water through the early part of the day.

    - Get your fresh air.
    - Drink water.
    - Eat Fruit & Veg.
    - Balanced diet.
    - Exercise regularly.
    - Good nights sleep. (min 7 1/2 - 8 hours.)

Sounds what you read out of every diet experts book, but it works.

And if you're at work or studying, keep the practical tasks for this time of day. Things like getting in touch with people or organising notes or whatever. It's easier to stay focused on something like that than on, say, reading.
