    Hi,

I've heard the government is bringing in changes in the VRT rates for classic and vintage cars. Does anyone have more information on this?

    Thanks

    I have a sinking feeling.
    1977 Mercedes 280SE Automatic

    Which model? w116 or w123?

    Mike.

W116 of course :-) The W123 would be the 280E, not the SE :-)

I would reckon the 'change' that is being referred to is the way the VRO offices are now treating cars that have an added market value or exclusivity, as opposed to considering them as just a 20 or 25 year old car. (actually this is happening since the last year or two!). This has always been affecting the status of cars like Porsches, Lotus, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, etc, but they have extended this category to some of the 'lesser' exclusive models, the likes of Capri's, Mercedes, and basically anything that you would consider as a sports car or sought after classic. So don't assume that any 20 or 25 year old car will be just the minimum fee of 315 euro's VRT, you could be in for a surprise. Always check the VRO office if you bring in a car younger than 30 years.

Mind, this would only affect cars YOUNGER than 30 years. The 30 year rule is, to my knowlegde, still unaffected, and these would still be just 50 euro's to bring in, regardless of value or make.

2cv- nice car (now some inside pix please!) but I worry about those wheel arches, are they concealing something nasty. I'd get them off and give the paint a good careful clean up. Fancy water traps those things.

Are you going to take off the stick on stripe on the side of it?

Yep... I hate it as well :-)) I'll get round to it... Doing some stuff to my 2CV first though... The Merc will be off the road for a while as i'm waiting for its 30th birthday, which i think is september or october. I won't be re-registering before that!!

So does the 30 year rule still apply where cars older than 30 years are exempt from VRT and pay minimal road tax (50euro i think )?

I checked the revenue.ie website and there was no mention of it although i seem to remember reading it there before.

On the same topic does anyone know if a car older than 30 years needs to go through the NCT before it can be registered in Ireland ? I'm planning register my MG here, it currently has a UK MOT but not sure what happens here.

Like I mentioned in my reply earlier in the thread, the 30 year rule is NOT affected in any way and no changes have been made that I am aware of. So any vehicle for which the date of first registration is earlier than the exact date 30 years ago (i.e as of today, the 14th february 1977) is
a/ exempt from VRT (only a 50 euro admin fee applies),
b/ pays a reduced annual road tax of approx 44 euro;s, and
c/ is exempt from the NCT test.

cheers, didn't see that in your earlier post, sorry for the hassle

It doesnt matter how many times I hear that, it still brings a very large smile to my face :D anbody whos ever brought a mini for an NCT (regardless or age and condition) will understand!!

Worth a mention that most insurance companies will look for a cert of roadworthiness on a +30 year old car, be it a garage report or NCT.

My logic is to just go and get an NCT cert - where else are you going to get someone to check your car over and highlight dodgy areas with yellow paint for 50 quid?

The AA charges over 200 for a car inspection.

Do you think if you had your calssic NCT'd that they would keep it on the system and send you reminders every two years ??

I agree its an excellent way of having the safety of brakes/shocks/steering/chassis etc checked !
