This is quite a good deal for less than €530 (reduce support service to 1yr. CAR): http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=ie&cs=iedhs1&kc=D4XESS03&l=en&oc=D02C16&rbc=D02C16&s=dhs&sbc=iedhsftdppdesktop3 I know it's just 512 Mb memory and integrated graphics, but the pluses are Athlon 64 3800+ Processor, the nice Dell 19" monitor, Vista Basic installed (upgrade to Premium for €30.25 extra) and the price (includes delivery)! The memory is easily and cheaply upgradable yourself, not from Dell. It's the last day of this offer today!

I thought Vista needed a minimum of 1gb ram to get going?

Yes 1Gb is recommended, 512Mb is the minimum but it automatically adjusts to whatever is available. Vista Basic can cope with less anyway because it doesn't have the Aero interface, that's as far as I know. If you want all the bells and whistles another 1Gb RAM is going to cost you around €100: http://www.crucial.com/eu/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=7CD99C24A5CA7304 That would be 1.5Gb of memory that should be more than enough (even for memory gobbling Vista or Vista Premium.)

Vista Basic is a waste of time - you can almost get enough free XP software to effectively get the same result.

Its an even better deal for €496 including Vat and Delivery if you follow Sponge Bobs linkee poos right here

Don't forget to reduce warranty to 1 year collect and return as Oracle said.

Why no modem on the above spec?

I tought a modem was essential?

It comes with onboard lan. Typically when they say no modem, it means no 56k modem, which really most people have no use for.

Gone up to €515 today , still an OK deal with 19" monitor and dvd burner as standard.

OK I've found the same spec plus Vista Home Premium and 1Gb of RAM for €589, so if Sponge Bob provides a "linkee poo" (5% off??) that should equal €560: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=ie&cs=iedhs1&kc=DRSC5211&l=en&oc=D02C17i&rbc=D02C17i&s=dhs&sbc=iedhsrsdimen_c521_1 You'll still need to reduce the hardware support to 1 year CAR (Collect and Return) to get the price.

For those who want it that's €45 extra for double the memory and Vista Premium.

Update: I've just noticed the hard drive is half the size of the previous spec, 80Gb not 160Gb. Otherwise the same. This PC is listed as having the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Processor the X2 being better: http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/dimen_c521?c=ie&cs=iedhs1&l=en&s=dhs but the Customise and Buy screen doesn't mention it: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=ie&cs=iedhs1&kc=DRSC5211&l=en&oc=D02C17i&rbc=D02C17i&s=dhs&sbc=iedhsrsdimen_c521_1 So I'm not clear about that, need to email Dell sales.

Linkee Poo as requested Oracle. The system has 1gb Ram (not 512mb) and vista premium like you told me . Everyone do what Oracle told yiz about the support to get the price. If you click on the price here its €548

    which gave me the idea

That's great Sponge Bob thanks. The price is even better than I thought at €548; price is €559 with basic speakers, and only accessories that are essential. :)

Are the PCI express slots standard.

Can I stick an off the shelf 6600 into this machine and run Battlefield 2 etc on it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Oracle

Yup: http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/dimen_c521?c=ie&cs=ieepp1&l=en&s=dhs&~tab=specstab and add up to 4Gb of memory.

Update: Actually I'm not familiar with the 6600 card you've mentioned, this PC does have a PCI Express Graphics slot as standard, but you'll need to check the height of your card before purchase because this PC is just 4.5" (11.43 cm) wide. Your graphics card would need to be less than this to fit inside the case.

funny that, i've seen it installed and working on a pc with 512mb. granted none of that fancy **** but working

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 25,234 ✭✭✭✭Sponge Bob

Just the PC itself . No Monitor at all if you already have a monitor , 512Mb ram and vista basic not premium supplied and dvd rom not dvd burner as supplied in the €500+ machines with monitor.

    €357

must reduce warranty to one year. that will run linux just fine sure , or XP :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Oracle

Nice idea Sponge Bob plus you could always swap out a CD/DVD writer from another machine. It's a perfect Linux box, I like Ubuntu, fast, easy and free.

Update: The price of this PC seems to have dropped. It's now showing as €548 without the EPP discount (Sponge Bob's link) that's for the better spec PC, with 1Gb RAM and Vista Premium. It hasn't been easy to get an answer from Dell as to whether this PC has the X2 processor or not, it is listed as such on the web site, but not on the Customise and Buy screen. If you get it it's a bonus because it's AMD's top-of-the-range dual-core processor: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=ie&cs=ieepp1&kc=DRSC5211&l=en&oc=D02C17i&rbc=D02C17i&s=dhs&sbc=iedhsrsdimen_c521_1

Update to the update: Sorry, no that price is with the EPP discount, there must be a wrong EPP link on Dell's Home Sales website.
