Underground hot-water pipe insulation.

I'm at the early stages of a self-build (house & garage). My boiler (probably WPB) will be loacated in the garage, where I have space for bulk fuel storage. Of course this means that I will need to pipe the hot water, underground from the garage to the house. The distance will depend on the position of the garage, which is what I'm working on right now. The distance is likely to be about 15m. Has anyone had any experience with pipe insulation which is suitable for this situation (hot water - underground). Any recommendations on suppliers, maximum distances, or typical costs, would be useful.

see rvr.ie for idea of the prices of insulated pipe in pipe.

You could try the diy route by using good pipe insulation well fitted/clipped to the 1" pipes, then strap two together and insert into 110 mm drain pipe. You need to keep water out of the drain pipe so use bends to bring the pipe into the houses at each end.

You will also have a duct in place for your wiring.

I have a similar setup, still under construction. I used this district heating pipe to connect the house to (space where the garage will go) it cost £30/m and my garage will be 20m away from the house. The main water tank is in the house, I also intend to fit solar panels to the garage along with a "solar" cylinder for summer hot water & winter pre-heat.

As above I ran a pair of 2" ducts in the trench with the insulated pipe for services.

Hi Dolanbaker, interesting stuff, could you tell me (PM if you wish) where you got this as I'm costing a move to WPB and would need to have a set up in a garage 15M-20M from the house. Thanks

I've a similar installation to dolanbaker, except have totally separate duct
for the electrics, i've also ran some coax cable (4) for a sat dish (4LNBs)
that will be positioned behind the garage.

Also two CAT5eS from the house (main hub) to the garage

    dolanbaker,

How did you find the pre insulated pipe. The distance to my garage is approx same but I am concerned about heat loss.

qualpex eco duo is another option, available nationwide.

Have a look at calpex, polyurethane insulation with either 1/2/4 pipes within a outer core, definitely the market leader in this type of installations, expect to pay approximate 35 euros per metre plus fitting.....perhaps google the above........
