Heading on a trip to the states in August. The preliminary route is New York, Chicago, San Fransisco, La & Vegas. Im about 70% sure we are going to drop LA (after reading the thread on boards which didnt paint a pretty picture and also, none of us drive) and possibly add Boston to the start instead.

We will be on a budget. Should have around 4000 euro for the whole trip (4 weeks) which will include flights, accomadation and spending money.

Its hard to know how much I should spend on hostels/hotels as I dont really know how much money I will need for other things. With that budget, should I try find the cheapest accomadation possible or go for 50-70 dollars a night ?

Any good cheap hostel/ hotel reccomendations for the above cities would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Travelodge is probably the cheapest ones you will find. Super 8 aren't too bad also for the price. For around 60-70 you could probably get a room one of the Ramada Limited hotels, which are nice.

Generally speaking, the cheapest accommodation is in the worst parts of town. I recall going to LA and booking the cheapest hotel we could find, I was with my wife and two of the lads and none of us felt safe.

I have always found the Holiday Inn Express decent. Usually around 60-80 Dollars a night with breakfast buffet included.

The YMCA hostels are generaly clean and safe. Check out them out, when you are checking in tell them you are a member of a different Y and they will often give a discount.

I stayed in a hostel on Amsterdam avenue, can't remember what street corner. Think it was the International Youth Hostel or something like that. Cost about $40 a night. Central park was only a 5 min walk and the subway was around the corner.
Electronic key cards needed for access to the building and rooms. All rooms had lockers for storage. Very clean. It was more like a mini hotel. Small cafe on ground floor to sweeten the deal.
