I see they are charging 2.50 per day on top of ticket prices of 9 euro. Does anyone else see this as a rip-off? I was all on for going until I heard of this surcharge.

We should have a festivus for the rest of us.

if you own a UGC unlimited card then you dont have to pay the 2.50 charge.

    That's the festival membership charge.

There needs to be a membership as many of the films haven't been rated by IFCO.

It's just €9 for membership for the whole festival and you get a very nicely produced programme with it.

Anyone have any idea what the surprise film is?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,738 ✭✭✭djkeogh

now don't go spoiling the surprise. The real attraction I find in going to this film is the not knowing. It's just a film screening once you know what it is.

Yeah maybe your right djkeogh. I was just wondering if there was any chance it could be Grindhouse? Its a long shot I know but is there any chance. Couldnt forgive myself if I missed that.

I doubt it very much. It's still in production isn't it?

Surprise films are generally universally sh*t at these things. I think someone posted before that the surprise film at a previous Dublin film Festival was Starsky and Hutch.

Yeah the first Irish screening of Starsky and Hutch. I went to the mystery film when it was The Jacket, the only second screening of it in the world at the time. The film was ok nothing majorly awesome but good. I'm still undecided whether I'm gonna go to it this year. FYI you get 10% of the actual film tickets if you have a student card as well!

Could people list which films they are going to see at the festival and give a reason for each? It might be a good way of getting recommendations for those of us not sure what to check out.

I'm going to 'Metropolis' in the National Gallery, mainly because I've never seen it before, but there's a live band doing the soundtrack as well, which sounds a bit different. (Lots of chin-stroking at that i imagine)

Apart from that, I've booked for:
'Sunshine' - Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's latest. Cillian Murphy stars. It's a sci-fi with an unlikely premise, so it could be either very good or very bad.
'Fast Food Nation' - documentary-style, based on the ubiquitous book, directed by (A Scanner Darkly) Richard Linklater.
'The Good German' - Steven Soderbergh and George Clooney's noir movie - this one's on at 10.30a.m. on a Saturday :(

    Would also like to see:
'Curse of the Golden Flower' - most expensive Chinese movie ever made, with loads of kick-ass battles apparently
'Letters from Iwo Jima' - although its probably on general release soon anyway

If interested, will be putting a bit of a Dublin Film Festival blurb on de blog at some point, along with reviews of what i go see

    De link to de blog

I challenge you to find a better value film festival.....

    btw has
    CLIMATES [IKLIMER]//
    DIRECTOR - NURI BILGE CEYLAN

Been dropped from the festival? - now seems on release at the IFI.

Was going to be my first pick.

(caution if you haven't seen Distant [Uzak] be aware that 'nothing' may happen on screen...be patient with this director..in fact make a conscious effort to get rid of any impatience and let his wonderful film-making wash over you)

That's not true. The Unlimited card has nothing to do with the film festival. It's a legal requirement since the fest operates as a club and as MonkeyFudge said the film's are unrated. That €2.50 will cover your membership for the day.

You need to buy a festival membership to cover you for the entirity of the thing.

If you have a cineworld card they give you free membership and a booklet with film info/timetable.

First rule of thumb i use for going to films in a festival is if it's a film from Ireland, Uk or USA, give it a miss, chances are it's going to come anyway.
Festivals are about trying to catch films that aren't going to go on general release later in the year.

I think €9 for membership is a bit steep, there's no need for a big fancy brochure, I always bin it at the end of the fest.

There's free festival brochures in the IFI, and it lists all the films.

Well I asked them at the desk in the cineworld lobby and they told me the unlimited card does void the 2.50 membership fee but you still pay into the film.

Take it up with the desk not me if they are wrong.

went to book all the tickets for films I wanted to see there now and 3 out of 4 are sold out. Very disappointed. No Film Fest yet again this year after promising myself I'd book the tickets on time!

Anyone planning on attending the finale, a film called Sparkle starring Bob Hoskins ... on Feb 25th?

If so I have rather embarrassing pathetic request to make. ;)

Does anybody know if you need to bring your credit card to collect tickets if you book online? I was about to pay with my 3V credit but realised that I might need a physical card to swipe in the cinema. I sent an email to the address listed on their site last night, but never got a reply.

Did you even find that out, or is that just your own thoughts?...

It is true, you do get full membership [€9] and a programme [€6] covered under your Unlimited card, i got mine a week ago.
