Ryanair and Extra Baggage

I'm flying with Ryanair tomorrow and my suitcase is almost 2 kilos overwight. I can't leave any stuff behind. I think it is cheaper to check in with an extra case than pay the excess wight fee but I can't find any details on this or how to do this on the Ryanair website. Will I be able to check in and pay for an extra case at the airport?

    Thanks! :)

You should be able to check in and pay for an extra case at the airport, although this won't solve your problem as you'll still be 2kgs overweight - and probably a bit more with the extra weight of the case!

My advice would be either to chance it, put the bag in and hope they don't notice (I've been 12kgs overweight before and gotten away with it, not with Ryanair though) or to put some of the stuff into a carry on bag to bring you just below the weight. TBH it's not uncommon for people to be let off for being a little over and even if you get fined its that excessive if it's only 2kgs!

Thanks! I already have a carry on case which I bought for my laptop and other stuff and I've just weighed it and it was over the 10kg limit so I've had to put the excess in the suitcase! :D

I'll just have to chance it and see what happens. Can't see Ryanair letting me get away with it, though! Almost 2kg maybe but well over 3kg I doubt it. :(

Are there any small, heavy items that you could stuff in the pockets of a large jacket?

All you need to do is to put them there for check-in and then you can stick them back in your carry-on before going through security.

That's a great idea but unfortunately, no, I haven't. I'm moving back to Ireland so I need this stuff until my removal arrives at the end of next week.

Plus, I have a job interview in the meantime so I've more stuff than I would ordinarily be bringing - suit/shoes etc.

Am I allowed to bring a handbag which would go over my shoulder (could squeeze a few odds and ends in there) and the carry on case or is it strictly only one item of carry on baggage?

From the UK, it's one item I believe (assuming you're coming from the UK)

Yes, I am flying from the UK. Looks like I'll just have to pay the excess.

    Thanks everyone. :)

flew to london & back last week with ryanair, I only brought hand baggage, going over was ok. I saw people bringing hanbag & bag etc on board.

Coming back was a different story, handbag was classed as hand baggage, i saw passengers being sent to check in their other bag, some people put hand bag inside hand baggage, that was ok.

Personally i was coming home with more than i brought. I wore as many clothes as i could & put the goods I bought in my hand baggage until I went through check in, then I took off the excess clothes and put them in my bag, i boarded the plane with 2 bags no probs,

Wear as much as you can and bring a bag to put them in when you go through check in

Um - you could always try putting an extra bag under your coat. I did this a few years ago. Had a big huge carry on. A normal carry on under my coat and hte bag over that. I was something like 19kg over the limit or something stupidly high.

I got away with it in the end. Although as someone pointed out at the UK airports them seem to be really strict on people. Try sticking the 2kg into your carry on perhpas.

You know they can only check your carry on when you check in! So if you give one to your mate while you check in and then take it back you will be fine.... assuming you have someone with you not flying. Otherwise you will not be seated together.

You could also risk leaving it near the checkin desk if there is no Q. Might get caught though.

They can be quite fond of making you take off your coat now and making it go through the scanner..

I'm travelling on my own and I'm always asked to take my coat off at security so it looks like I'm just going to have to pay up. Thanks for all your suggestions, though! :)

On a related note, do they weigh your cabin baggage if you check in online?

    No.

They don't usually weigh it when you check in in person unless they think it may be overweight.

Last time I checked in online for Ryanair, they did warn that if your carry on luggage is overweight, they reserve the right to have you check it in, which is prolbematic on many levels.
