Just thought some of the knife afficiandos would appreciate this clip of the recent seminars conducted by Tuhon Tom Kier in early and late January. Really fuvking pissed I couldn't make this as it sounds from what the lads have posted on the Sayoc forum that it was on unreal experience. Bear in mind all of the knifes in finished form started as a block of rusty steel. Tuhon showed the lads how to make sheaths and handles as well, the whole product.

Any of you guys interested in survival would do well to have a look at the main page of the Sayoc site where there is a short clip of a new DVD by "Tracker Dan" an former Navy SEAL and survival expert who was also an instructor in Tom Brownes tracking school. Looks like an excellant DVD on the subject and one which I'll be shortly adding to my collection.

Dave will check this out later...

In the meantime...Do you know of a Knife Instructor called Tom Sotis who has AMOK?

I am doing an intensive weeklong seminar under him in knife fighting later in the year over here in Pattaya.

I hear their fairly brutal in their training, so it will be an interesting experience!!!!

    Dave,

The Centre for Traditional Skills in Lismore used to run a weekend course where you started with a piece or iron ore right out of the ground ("bog ore" see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bog_iron) and ended up with a small wooden handled knife.

    http://www.traditionalskills.ie/

John dropped the course due to lack of interest but I'm sure he's be willing to resurrect it for a group if there was enough interest..... John might not have Tuhon Tom's colourful background but he's a great smith.

I missed the knife course (twice !) but have done wrought iron and stone work courses at the centre and they were excellent.

Wow, that sounds very interesting Martin, and as the bold Scuttery1 said I'd defo be willing to take part and we could probley round up a fair group that would be likely to do it too, (we might even have a few guys from Boards.ie interested????). Any chance you could check out required numbers, costs etc and post them up here please Martin, ta very much,

I'd certainly be up for it also! ;)

I've rehandled a few knives and am planning on making a corner of my shed into a work space for making knives (using stock removal methods). I'd love to try my hand at forging! San Mai or Damascus would be years away, but a forge wrought smiths knife would be so cool!

I doubt the neighbours would be best pleased if I set up a full forge out the back, especially with a big ringing Anvil for beating on of a Sunday Morning! :D

BTW, if anyone is interested in learning a load about forging or stock removal methods, or anything else to do with knives, follow the link in my sig. line. They don't like to talk about knives as anything other than tools, so please respect that and enjoy youselves!

John at the Centre for Traditional Skills isn't offering any courses this year I', afraid as they are in the process of moving premises. If I hear anything in the future, I'll post it on here.
